Product Description

Paradise calls to Chase Wilcox. A man of science, escaping the destruction of his own personal world, he is drawn to the lush beauty of the island of Hawaii and the secrets it holds. Here he intends to immerse himself in his work . . . and somehow heal and forget. A research assistant, an artist, and a dancer, Nicole Ballard also hides a secret pain. Together on an important scientific project in the moist, verdant heart of a tropical wonderland, both she and Chase will be forced to confront their own lingering inner darkness. But in the shadows of Mount Kilauea, a passion that burns like fire will erupt, as unpredictable and dangerous as the living volcano, transforming the very landscape of their lives. A classic story of desire, hope, and dangerous destiny from the incomparable "New York Times" and "USA Today" bestselling author Elizabeth Lowell

5.0 out of 5 stars Rerelease, Handle with Care 7 Dec 2002
By Farfalla VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Eden Burning I found to be a quite entertaining and well writen portrait of two people falling in love. (The only distracting thing, is if you know the dates for the eruptions that are talked about in the book, with modern periphenalia superimposed.) The hero, Chase, is a vulcanologist, and Nicole is a talented artist and scientific illustrator. She meets Chase when he comes to Hawai'i to save his married younger brother Dane, from the clutches of a homewrecker, namely, Nicole. Dane however tries to set Chase up with Nicole, with neither realizing what is being done.

Chase has divorced a woman two years ago who was only after his money, and manage to get full custody of their daughter in order to keep money coming in from her ex. Nicole came to Hawai'i after a difficult marriage. Her husband left her when her family lost their wealth.

All of the characters are fully fleshed out, so that there is reason and motivation for the actions of all the people involved. Chase's daughter Lisa, plays a key role in the book, and acts as much more than a plot device. She has been wounded by her own mother's rejection, and watching Chase and Nicole try to deal with their feelings for each other while not damaging the little girl is almost heart-breaking.

I enjoyed this book, and was sorry to see it end. Who cares if it is essentially a reprint.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book - but be careful! 29 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent story that will capture you attention from the first page and hold it until the last. The characters are well written and three dimensional, so that you really care what happens to them and their motivations are well explained so that you understand why Chase initially behaves as he does. The writing is powerful and emotional and I found myself with tears in my eyes when Nicole discovers Chase's betrayal.

If you like Elizabeth Lowell's other books, you are sure to enjoy this one. However, as with many of her others, this book is an expanded re-release of her original 1986 Silhouette story, 'Fires of Eden', it isn't quite the same but it is very similar and if you already have FoE, you might want to think twice about buying this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Drop "Eden Burning" Into the Nearest Volcano 24 Jan 2002
By Mason Dixon - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
That's where this book belongs. As a long-time fan of Elizabeth Lowell, I eagerly await her new releases. I wish I had skipped this one; "Eden Burning" was a big disappointment. Chase Wilcox, professional vulcanologist, and Nicole Ballard, artist and dancer, meet on the island of Hawaii. Each has a tragic "secret" from the past that must be overcome before they can acknowledge their love. There is a great deal of drumming (Chase) and dancing to Tahitian music (Nicole aka Pele, goddess of fire) that is just too silly for words. The best parts are the descriptions of the island, the little bit that you get about its native population, and the fascinating material included on volcanoes. Ms. Lowell does her research. Save your money for the next book about the Donovan clan, or go back and buy one of Ms. Lowell's older works written as Ann Maxwell, such as "Tell Me No Lies."

3.0 out of 5 stars REPRINT 16 Jan 2002
By J. Hudson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Be warned, this is a reprint of Lowell's Fires of Eden novel. The story is a good one, but don't buy it thinking it's a new one. I only gave 3 stars because it is a reprint, not as a reflection of the story quality.

1.0 out of 5 stars That makes two in a row 28 Jan 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Fool me once, shame on you..fool me twice, shame on me. This is the second EL book in a row that has been a huge disappointment. I know that it is a reprint of an earlier work, but I had not previously read it. After her last book, Moving Target, which was awful, I was cautious to pay the hardcover price. I decided that since EL has always been my favorite author I would try again. BIG MISTAKE. While this effort is better than Moving Target, it doesn't come anywhere close to the past writings of EL. I'm beginning to wonder if EL, or her publishers, ever bother to read the reviews written by the people who spend their money to buy her books. There was a wonderful cadence and rhythm
that was always present in her writing. EL created characters that we could care about, wove a wonderful story and let us escape for a while into a romance that was powerful. That, apparently, is her past style of writing. If you read the back inside cover she indicates that she no longer writes the kind of novels that we have come to love, which is terribly disappointing. It's time to start searching for a new author...one who writes like Elizabeth Lowell used to.
