Product Description

From the Back Cover

If you’ve never seen an Eddie Stobart truck, you’ve never driven down a British motorway.

This is the extraordinary story of a multi-million pound business that spawned a middle-class motorway game. Of dynastic struggles that ended in a merchandising shop opposite Carlisle cathedral.

A quintessentially British tale – written by the inimitable bestselling writer Hunter Davies, and with the full promotional support of Eddie Stobart himself.

--This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

About the Author

Hunter Davies is a broadcaster and is the author of over thirty books, many of them seminal best-sellers. He is ex-editor of the Sunday Times Magazine and now writes for The Independent, the Mail and the Standard. He is married to the novelist and biographer Margaret Forster.

I once heard someone say want a challenge in life "Read a book on something you are not mad about" . I am more a football , rugby league or wrestling fan . But my first job was working at a haulage firm (not Eddie's) . So I thought I would read his book . You usually get the idea these big famous people , who make it . Have had a easy ride in life . This book surprised me . with some amazing great tales . Again found it hard to put down , once I started reading it . I found this book an great inspiration , things (dreams) can be possible .

This book is the story of Edward Stobart, whose father used to hire himself and his horse and cart to Cumberland Council for 27 shillings and sixpence a day, and is now probably the best know haulier in the world. A working class lad who suffered with a speech impediment and a less than average school record decided he loved the haulage business and with his combination of vision, risk taking and hard work made himself into a successful businessman. I found this biography, of such a decent, honest man, an inspiring read.

Good indepth reading into the spectacular rise of Edward Stobart, really interesting, not just this one man,but the area in which he was brought up in,just a great pity that Edward Stobart died at such a young age,he seemed to have everything, but sometimes everything is not worth alot,if you are not happy with your life!

I was a little disappointed with this item as it is just a normal paperback with not very many photos. But it is interesting to read the story of how thw Stobart Empire developed. I just think that it should have been priced a little lower.

I found this book to be very informative with a great insight into the Stobart history, because it was written some time ago i had to go on the net to bring me up to date with the story and the untimely death of Edward Stowart, a fascinating read that would benefit with an up dated version.
