Product Description

Product Description
If you've never seen an Eddie Stobart truck, you've never driven down a British motorway. This is the story of a multi-million pound business that spawned a middle-class motorway game. It details dynastic struggles that ended in a merchandising shop opposite Carlisle Cathedral and the entrepreneurial spirit that built the biggest road haulage business in Britain.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you only ever read 1 book , make it this one ., 11 Dec 2005

I once heard someone say want a challenge in life "Read a book on something you are not mad about" . I am more a football , rugby league or wrestling fan . But my first job was working at a haulage firm (not Eddie's) . So I thought I would read his book . You usually get the idea these big famous people , who make it . Have had a easy ride in life . This book surprised me . with some amazing great tales . Again found it hard to put down , once I started reading it . I found this book an great inspiration , things (dreams) can be possible .

3.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin!, 31 Jul 2007
By R. Pentreath (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is the story of Edward Stobart, whose father used to hire himself and his horse and cart to Cumberland Council for 27 shillings and sixpence a day, and is now probably the best know haulier in the world. A working class lad who suffered with a speech impediment and a less than average school record decided he loved the haulage business and with his combination of vision, risk taking and hard work made himself into a successful businessman. I found this biography, of such a decent, honest man, an inspiring read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story of struggling through challenges to achieve the best, 27 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Only The Best Will Do is the official biography of Eddie Stobart written by Noel Davidson in conjunction with Eddie and his wife Nora. In stirring terms this book graphically spells out the challenges faced by the Stobarts, neither of whom had an easy childhood. It is a story of victory over adversity, a constant striving to achieve the best; an ethos that was to become the central theme of Eddie and Nora's lives and one that would lead them into positions of great responsibility. Eddie, together with his son, also Eddie, founded the nationally recognised transport fleet, Eddie Stobart Ltd, in 1970. Today the familiar livery of those pristine lorries is a constant reminder on our motorways of God's provision. Similarly blessed, Nora became the UK Presdient of the Auxiliaries, the women's branch of Gideons International. Only The Best Will Do is compulsive reading and it doesn't gloss over the difficulties, rather it allows the reader to get to know and respect this gifted, yet surprisingly modest couple. The answers to prayers and steps of faith recounted are simply breathtaking. Eddie and Nora's love of the Lord is plain to see and evidently no secret amongst the many contacts provided by their busy lives. This is a tale of hardworking, obedient, dedicated, fruitful Christian family whose members set an example we all would do well to follow. Despite their obvious success it is clear that both Eddie and Nora have maintained their satndards and the Lord has blessed them bountifully. An excellent birthday or Christmas present! Chalmers Dobson (Sounding Out magazine of GNB).
