Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Light years before political correctness--1983 to be exact--or his comeback in tame Disney comedies, Eddie Murphy was a charismatic, wonderfully offensive, egocentric 22-year-old black comedian known for crude celebrity impersonations and often shockingly frank diatribes on racial and sexual politics. Dressed in a skin-tight red leather suit and delivering endless streams of obscenities faster than Richard Pryor ever did, Murphy is captured in this raunchy HBO special (a filmed document of his Grammy-winning album, Eddie Murphy, Comedian) at his confident, swaggering, comedic peak--a posture that soon disappeared after a string of bland Hollywood comedies. Here, however, his energy and sheer virtuosity command complete control over the audience for 107 minutes, whether he's mocking personalities like Elvis, James Brown, and Stevie Wonder, or spinning long, gag-filled personal anecdotes about the ice-cream man or dysfunctional family barbecues. There's no apologizing for the immature stereotyping, blatant homophobia, and sexism (though Murphy did so several years later) that surface during the routine. But, then again, unlike his much nastier, one-sided concert film, Raw, no topic here is safe from Murphy's uproarious tongue-lashings--including the comedian himself. --Dave McCoy

In days gone by, before Eddie Murphy became the (not so) big-screen celebrity he is now, he was a Stand Up comedian and believe it or not - probably one of the finest. He had that natural ability to reduce an audience to tears of laughter, the kind of laughter where you're holding your stomach with the pain and almost praying for Murphy to stop.
The family Barbecue, Elvis' latter years, Mr. T... Just get this video, watch it, understand what I'm on about & crease yourself.

After the success of 'Delirious' came the more polished & ultimately less effective, 'Raw'. But again some incredible comedy.
Delirious - a must see - again & again & again & again........!

brilliant! 4 May 2003

Eddie Murphy at his peak! When he did real comedy instead of the disney movies he does now. The stand up goes through his life from age 7 to 22 at his prime. The impressions of Mr T and other stars of the 80's are in here and all spot on and hilarious. Eddie murphy the comical GENIUS that he was. if you want to see comedy at its best buy this film.

PS AUNT BUNNY GREAT STUFF (you'll know what i mean when you buy this top rate stand up)

About time! I have been waiting for this to be released on DVD for years. I only have a really bad US VHS, well worn as well. Buy this immediatley. The greatest stand up show of all time. Beleive me Eddie Murphy was not always just a guy who stars in stupid films, he used to be a genius. RAW is good, this is ten times as funny.

Absolutely hilarious
This stand up show shows why Murphy is so successful in comedy this is the funniest thing I have ever seen him in and that's including all of his films.

Not a classic.
This hasn't aged well. A young Murphy, recorded with a large audience, may have been cutting edge in 1983 but it all looks very dated now. Read more

a classic, Eddie is at his very funny moments, true iconic stand up... To much swearing and sexual jokes though...

Some interesting extras, but the main film is worth it
Back when Murphy was fresh off Saturday Night Live, when he was a mere 22 years old, he was relentlessly funny. Fair enough he was crass and homophobic, but he was still hilarious. Read more

Funny as heyall!
Very funny, been meaning to watch this for years. Old school and the shock factor isn't as poignant as it was in 83 but still funny as hell.

A must for stand up fans.
