5.0 out of 5 stars a little gem 21 Dec 2006
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
A fine collection of fantastic tracks with a world flavour.from arabic to africa from chilling out to dance your pants off."Funky In The Middle" is one of the funkiest afro 70's tracks you'll find. "cleopatra in new york" a hipnotic desert slinky song."Endangered Species"pure chill."The Global Village" a right hip hop global fusion with a driving organ ."Mystery Of Life" pure Augustus pablo organ heaven... it's a mystery to me why nobody else is raving about this cd..... a gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Album of the year? 6 Sep 2009
Format:Audio CD
Blimey, where to start? I first got to hear of Nickodemus through his collaboration with Quantic on the opener Mi Swing es Tropical. This is a likeable tune with it's sunny loping groove, but it is not exactly a showstopper. Have to admit to being a little nonplussed when I heard of the album, but I read some positive reviews and thought it might be worth buying...after all Quantic rarely works with anyone not 'up there'.

There was also a warning sign when I found the aforementioned single was track one. This can mean two things:
Sometimes it indicates that the rest of the album is a turkey and the label hopes people will buy it after hearing track one alone...
... or the album is so good, they can drop the single first and still excite people with the rest of the content.
Thankfully Endangered Species falls into the latter category...Since buying it over a month ago, I have had great difficulty extracting it from my CD is a real grower!

From the Eastern tinged pneumatic funk of Funky in the Middle to the hypnotically compelling Mystery of Life with it's repetitively plucked stringed instrument (no idea what it is, but it's lovely!) and sweet vocal from Andrea Monteiro, here is an artist who isn't afraid to play with 'World' styles without going down the worthy route. There really isn't a bad track on this wonderful disc.

The whole album is a melting pot, he really does delight in bringing in global influences; Middle Eastern vibe in Cleopatra in New York... Kalimba-based rap on The Spirits Within, the Soukous inspired sunshiney Back From Africa...we go all over...but for me the crowning glory is Give The Drummer Some. This bass-powered funky monster is a real mover.

Bought this after hearing the first track in an iPod advert, love the salsa beats and the splendid combination of grooves on Endangered Species. Cool tunes.

nickodemus is well known for the famous "turntables on the hudson" series , probably one of the most important compilations albums. This is his debut solo album, a great exercise of musical talent where every song is different and goes from a refined hip-hop, to african influenced funk. Nickodemus has always been interested in trying to show the different sounds new york's multiple cultures has to offer. He considers this cd as something like a soundtrack for the city, being myself from Madrid I really can't tell if it's an accurate soundtrack, but if he succeeded, new york would definitively be a wonderful place to live. Buy this record if you liked the "turntables", and if you have never heard about nickodemus, buy this record and a couple of turnatables. It's an amazing record, but I only give it 4 stars to distinguish it from the masterpieces: those cd's that appear very rarely. This is probably a 4.5 stars album,a must have, and for me one of the best of 2005

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent music! 3 Jun 2007

This cd is astonishing! Its well rounded, welding in a vast variety of sounds from around the world, and I got to say that there isn't one track that I dislike on this cd. Each and every track is a hit! The hip hop tracks on this cd, I believe, really should represent hip hop today, instead of all the garbage and degrading words in its mainstream. The bottom line is, if you want to chill out some evening or even during the day, this would be the cd to do it too!

4.0 out of 5 stars Gateway to a Broader World of Groovy Music 14 April 2007
By R. Smallwood - Published on
Format:Audio CD
I bought Endangered Species after hearing Cleopatra in New York off of Putumayo's Sahara Lounge CD. I was looking for something funky, "hip-hopish" and worldly. In my opinion, Cleopatra in New York Best represents what I was looking for on this CD. The music on this CD lives up to the description on its cover - i.e. the music is as varied as the people of New York City. The music is up temple and there are four or five other tracks that get bobbing my head and grooven in my car.

I was hoping for sophisticatedly produced tracks in the vein of the aforementioned Cleopatra, which successfully incorporates the Middle Eastern influenced stings, and vocal styling of Carol C with a distinctly funky, hip-hop beat. Most of the tracks do this quite well but a few of them are missing that "funky" element I was looking for.

Bottom Line: it's a good album and I highly recommend to those who, like me, are extremely tired of the stuff being played on Pop and R&B stations. If this is you, let this CD be a gateway to a broader world of groovy music.

really delicious, lots of variety, groovy dance music. cleopatra in NY has a texture like melt in your mouth taffy and a fragrance like honeysuckle. mi swing is more latin and has a luscious tropical feeling. simmered to perfection.
4.0 out of 5 stars Nickodemus ‎– Endangered Species 17 April 2014
By scoundrel - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Nickodemus manages to travel around the world with his debut, ENDANGERED SPECIES, and we, the listeners, reap the benefits. We start off in Cuba with the warmth strum and horns of "Mi Swing Es Tropical" before popping over to New York for the funk-jazz of "Funky In The Middle." This album is meant to make you move, and move you will, whether you like it or not. We jump over to the Middle East with "Crazy Stranger," with the woodwinds and percussion creating a sirocco of sound, and "Cleopatra In New York" reinforces this vocally. "Peace Pipe" heads south, into Africa, and the steel pan that starts off "The Spirits Within" cements this. Not only does Nickodemus jump around sonically, but also percussively, going from straight-up house kicks to upbeat hip-hop and even some dub with "Rhythm Love." The dub merges with some Israel instrumentation in "The Global Village." Much cheaper than plane fare to all those continents!
5.0 out of 5 stars Endangered Species thats right. 1 May 2009

Now days if some what difficult to find good beats the radio is wash with nonsense, and to our rescue comes Nickodemus giving us a good dose of Rythms, in this album My Swing es Tropical is inclured along with other favorites like Funky in the Middle just like the name say very funky, the trumpets the breaks and the bongos are excellent along with the organ and the effecs, Crazy Stranger it has some special beat to it it sounds like if Indian Flutes, Balkan Horns and New York beats got together Nickodemus you did it, Cleopatra in New York i like this original piece is to relax and enjoy, Bailamos en el Junque somewhat similar to y Swing es Tropical but with a female voice right at the star you will notice the Latin on it [Cinco Estrellas], Back From Africa is cool, the Electric guitar gives it a nice touch when the percussion is playing, and then the harmonic voices it feels like you are in a live concert in MOTHER LAND.
