Product Description

He’s the Suffolk school drop-out who’s become Britain’s hottest musical property. Ed Sheeran is the double Brit Award-winning singer songwriter with a tiny guitar and a huge talent. But how did a young musician who described himself as a ‘spotty, chubby, ginger teenager’ go from selling CDs from his rucksack to playing in front of Royalty at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – not to mention a worldwide TV audience of a billion? From his bohemian Yorkshire childhood to the brink of international stardom, David Nolan traces the story of Sheeran’s musical life and times. Featuring exclusive interviews with friends, relatives, musical collaborators and key figures in his rise to stardom, A+ shows how Ed Sheeran made his mark on the music industry, playing the game via his own set of fiercely independent rules and winning fans like Elton John and Jamie Foxx along the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ed book 15 Nov 2012
Format:Hardcover
Good read, well written. Loads of interviews with people from Eds past, rather than recycled stuff from old newspapers and magazines. Bit muso/high brow for some tastes I suspect but for a genuine fan, the real deal.
Certainly stands out on my bookshelf ... the cover is really, really orange!

4.0 out of 5 stars Ed Sheeran - the brand is launched. 24 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read this book fairly quickly, purely to get some insight into the basic steps that Ed Sheeran took to build a fan base. Simplistically, I have listed below, ten of the most obvious steps that stood out in the book.

1. He first practised a set to play for free, then systematically played at hundreds of gigs around the UK (and a few in the USA).
2. He created a few EPs in various genres of music, to broaden and test his audience.
3. He sold CDs after his gigs to pay for food and production of new material.
4. He slept on sofas and travelled light, even choosing a smaller guitar to carry.
5. He got got the backing and support of family and friends who understood him, who then spoke positively about him from the start.
6. He got connected early, networked, contributed and sourced feedback relentlessly in social media.
7. He continuously experimented with technology to keep his sound 'fresh.'
8. He chose a 'nice guy' image, likeable to all age groups and consistently stuck to his 'ginger' brand with casual dress.
9. He chose to learn from the best in the business that he could meet (writing, producing and performing) and got endorsed in their community.
10. To get publicity relentlessly, to stay relevant and keep it simple.

Its the last point that I think made the book possible. Ed keeps his message about his story, who he is and what he wants to sing about quite simple. This makes him easily quotable and accessible. The author has taken the time to collate a series of media quotes to tell the story for him. Its reads more like a history rather than a personal biography to me. If you want to know what Ed thinks, if it isn't already said in the media, it isn't in the book.
