Twentieth Century-Fox's 1965 epic tells the story of the struggle of the great Renaissance master Michelangelo to create and execute the frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican.
The early to mid 60s certainly seems to have been something of a "purple patch" for composer Alex North; on the heels of his mammoth, wonderfully evocative score for "Cleopatra" came his majestic score for "The Agony and the Ecstasy", which in my opinion contains some of the most moving and elegant music he ever wrote.
It seems that the quality of North's work was fully appreciated by his fellow composer Jerry Goldsmith, who in the company of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, here delivers a rendition of great sensitivity and richness. In a word, superb; a recording which in my view is well worth a place in the collection of any lover of film music.

Note; anyone unaware of the fact might like to note that Goldsmith himself composed some 12-13 minutes of music for an explanatory prologue which was added to the film. An excellent recording of this work ("The Artist Who Did Not Want To Paint") by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Goldsmith, can be found on Intrada RVF 6007D.
