I have been using these for about 1.5 years now, and definitely recommend them to people who are happy to do their wash a bit differently than they are used to.
These are probably not good for people who can't be bothered changing old habits, and who are used to strongly scented laundry... this can be done with a rinse of fabric softener in the rinse cycle _after_ _removing_ _them_ :-) I have never noticed any smells when I don't though.
They perform well if the instructions are followed, esp:
1: _Thoroughly_ cleaning out the washing machine dispenser area & tubes etc 1st!
2: Not overfilling the machine (3/4 is good)
3: _Only_ using liquid laundry detergent in the same machine to keep it clean, never powder.
I have saved money, find them easier to use - just throw them in with the laundry, they clean well (except for pure whites & very dirty items), work at 30 deg, and my bedsheets no longer make my skin itchy. Shorter washes from not having to rinse out detergent are great. It saves on the water bill, great in a house where the washine machine is shared :-)
One of my friends asked if the balls damage clothes, I have not noticed any damage at all, but do not use them for delicates.
I have read some of the comments on here, most of the negative reviews are just consequence of not following the instructions (who reads instructions! ;-) ) esp cleaning out the machine 1st and doing occasional hot washes - which is necessary anyway! Also they have no optical brighteners so whites won't look the same.
They aren't suitable for washing everything, I use mine over 90% of the time tho. Still using laundry liquid for hot washes, delicates, very white clothes and very dirty clothes.
I noticed a while ago it wasn't cleaning as well, as the pellets inside had shrunk dramatically from use. Just refilled it with the pellets in the box (the balls were a bit hard to open) and the next wash was back to the usual quality.

These are a fantastic product if you are willing to change your habits.
I didn't think I could, as I have always loved the smell of fabric conditioner.
As a previous person has said, you need to follow the instructions and definitely clean out your machine first. I would recommend putting some white vinegar in the fabric softener drawer and running a very hot cycle.
You also need to bear in mind that it takes a few washes,to get rid of all the gunk left over from the detergents, which does leave your washing smelling a bit funny. After this has all gone your washing WILL smell nice again.
I like the smell now, they just smell of clean water.
I do tend to do my washing on a 40C or higher for everything, mainly because I have two small children and the stains don't come out otherwise.
Other people have said that stains don't come out, but if you use the stain remover that comes with, I personally think it is just as good as vanish. The pure oxygen whitener works well, if you soak very hard stains and then use the stain remover again before washing. But like all stain removers not everything comes out.
The only down side is that your whites don't look as white, which has lead me to use detergents occasionally.
Overall I think they are great and definitely save money and loads of water. I would highly recommend them and have already bought some for my mum.

To say I was a little sceptical when I first heard about these via an online cloth nappy forum would be an understatement. However, having read some of the reviews on here I decided to give them a go.
I did give the dispensing drawer a good clean out and also ran the "tub clean" feature on our machine first, as recommended.
Then came the first wash. I was honestly expecting to have to put everything back in the machine again and rewash with detergent. But no! Everything came out clean, stain free & smelling fresh. Even my daughter's clothes, a 10 month old with a tendency to end up wearing a fair bit of her food!
So far, I've washed darks, brights and lights with excellent results & am looking forward to being able to wash nappies and towels without the need to do additional rinse cycles to get rid of the detergent.

Good product , especially for towels that only need a short wash, come out nice and fluffy. Gave daughter the other ball as my grandson has bad excema.
