5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent questions - but best with teacher guidance, 27 Jul 2009
By Roger (Colchester) - See all my reviews
This is the student workbook to accompany Sloman's Economics textbook (which I've reviewed elsewhere). It contains many multiple-choice and short-explanation questions, plus more evaluative questions based on newspaper articles or passages. They are usefully arranged by textbook chapter, making for easier reference, and a bonus is that Sloman does not simply provide one-word answers, but provides a short explanation, particularly useful for the multiple choice questions.

This is probably best for the undergraduate student, who may be expected to be used to self-study. For the A-level student, it has two disadvantages. First, the textbook is not specific to any exam board, so there are topics which may or may not be relevant (eg monopolistic competition). This is less of a problem in a textbook, but not so easy to discern in a workbook; a student might spend a while wrestling with a question on something he or she may not have even studied!

Second, while there are some simple questions, they definitely become more challenging! I once carelessly threw some out as homework to a group of very bright grammar school students, and while in theory they had all the knowledge (and ultimately they conceded that) the net result was to depress them - not at all what was intended! These days I make sure I lead them through more carefully. The questions are excellent, and can certainly stimulate thinking, but may be above the standard required at A-level.

Still, a very good set of posers - and excellent for the teacher to boot!
