Product Description

Product Description

In this age of eco-bling where sustainability becomes yet another ill-defined buzz word and people rush to fix their unsuspecting buildings, with green technology badges such as wind turbines, not all such additions are as green as they first appear. This book highlights more realistic and cost effective approaches to going 'green' by showcasing 'eco-minimalism' - a good-housekeeping approach to ecological building design and specification, concentrating on less glaringly obvious strategies such as insulation, draught-proofing and the use of healthy materials. Written by the distinguished architect Howard Liddell, this book exposes the pitfalls of 'greenwashing' in an immediate, visually-arresting and authoritative way. The intention is to present basic tenets in a quickfire, highly accessible format aimed at not just architects, other construction professionals and related students but everyone who cares about the sustainability of our built environment. A number of case studies support its central message, that the scattergun, 'Christmas tree' approach should be ditched in favour of holistic, considered and appropriate deployment of building science in support of truly ecological, affordable sustainable architecture for everyone - in other words eco-minimalism.

Eco-minimalism 19 April 2010
Howard Liddell has written an excellent handy size book covering a range of Eco topics and giving them commonsense appraisal. For instance in D.I.Y stores we see home wind turbines being offered for sale without appropriate assessment of the wind conditions or the correct advice for attachment to buildings. The wider aspect of the impact of so called eco materials is also taken into account ie timber cladding and how it has been treated. We take many things for granted and have been led along marketing paths that have not always been in our best interest. Mr Liddell has addressed this with his book and allows us to see the wood for the trees. I can honestly say this book confirmed many doubts I had on some green issues and brought to light many more. Well worth reading

Excellent Book 27 April 2011
By Harman
Much promotion of eco-home technology has been by technoligical and materials interest-groups. Few books present such a deep understanding of just how much add-on 'eco-bling', as Howard Lidell calls it, has pervaded the consciousness of the public, politicians, and indeed property professionals in the widest sense, as coming to mean 'sustainable technology'. Howard Lidell has been considering these issues for 40 years as an academic and practitioner and he knows what he is talking about. He advocates a low-tech approach to eco-conscious buildlings, and he is absolutely right. This book was finally published a couple of years ago, however reading it recently, it has become clear that during the intervening time, its thesis and advocacy has become even more correct, despite these fast-changing times. A book ahead of its time. Read and enjoy.
