Book Description

29 Mar 2000
In this new book Herman Daly, a leading commentator on the environment, offers lively criticism of existing work on ecological economics and the economics of ecology. The theme throughout the book is about changes in perspective, attitudes and policies required to avoid uneconomic growth - that is, the impoverishment that results when the environmental and social costs of growth exceed the benefits. Key issues addressed include: growth economics; misunderstandings of thermodynamics; economic development and population; globalization; money; and humans in the ecosystem. This book should be of interest to economists, ecologists, environmentalists, public policy scholars and activists as well as social philosophers.

Everyone should be at least introduced to the concepts of Ecological Economics, and who better to introduce you than Herman Daly, the father of EE. This book is great for both beginners and those who want to learn more about the topic.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but a little dated, mushy. 25 Aug 2004
By Roger Fort - Published on
Most of these essays appeared in the 1980s and 1990s. They were iconoclastic for their time, but -- perhaps because they had an impact -- seem somewhat dated today, after Seattle 1999, 9/11/01, etc. Perhaps that's an unfair critique; a newer edition might include new introductory and concluding chapters that situate these papers more in the historical context.

Analytics are not the strength of these essays, they would not pass muster in the AER or JLEO; their strength is in raising points of view omitted elsewhere. Some people don't find that useful, and admittedly some of the essays are too wordy -- could be cut in half or more -- but if you enjoy iconoclastic thinking you'll enjoy these.
