Book Description

30 Nov 2007
The hottest trend on the catwalk is ethical clothing. Top fashion designers and spokesmodels including Katharine Hamnett, Stella McCartney and Bono's wife Ali Hewson are all voicing the benefits of eco chic. But what is this new fad, and what difference can it make to the world? "Eco Chic" gives you the full story on this fashion phenomenon, from which fabrics are harmful to the environment, to how you can create your own eco-friendly fashions through recycling and savvy shopping. You will discover how to spot and avoid garments produced in sweatshops and why supermarket 'fast clothes' make both you and the planet sick. This book will allow you to look great but also feel good about your impact on other people and the planet as a whole.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Judge A Book By It's Cover.... 24 Mar 2008
Format:Paperback
I bought this after buying "Green Is The New Black" by Tamsin Blanchard and thought nothing could top it and was a little put of by the cover and cheesy title, I hate everything labeled as "Chic"!

I was wrong! This book is fantastic!!

It has helped with my dissertation and has changed the way I shop, buy, design, dye fabrics etc etc! To date it is the best fashion book I have ever read, so informative, easily read, very addictive, covers everything - dates, places, names and faces! FANTASTIC!!!

I HIGHLY Recommend to all!

I wonder if Kate Fletchers "Sustainable Fashion and Textiles" book will top it?!? It arrives tomorrow so will let you know.......

4.0 out of 5 stars Good overview of ethical clothing 20 Jun 2008
By Grant Young - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book doesn't pretend that eco-fashion (or ethical clothing) is going to save the world. It does, however, touch on the key issues facing the fashion industry and outlines some of the efforts to overcome them.

It is a timely reminder how little the industry has progressed overall, but does show that progress is being made and momentum is building.

Although it is someone UK-centric, the book does cover a lot of ground - from organic cotton and wool to eco-synthetics, dying and printing techniques, recycling & swap meets. It also examines the social impacts of the industry (sweatshop labour, globalisation etc.) - don't let the "eco" in the title fool you.

The directory at the back contains a goldmine of pointers to sites related to the topic. And it also contains many interesting and useful statistics and factoids for anyone interested in the field for study or starting a business.
