2.0 out of 5 stars Dubious savings, 11 Dec 2008
By Polly on film (London, UK) - See all my reviews
It's not all it's cracked up to be, but serves a purpose for the sort of person who does tend to be at their desk as much as they are away from it - but then the correct setup of Windows Power Settings (in Control Panel) could have you hibernating your PC after a few minutes of inactivity without having to worry about hitting the big green button that is permanently illuminated and, as a result, using electricity.

By installing the button and necessary software, you will soon be saving the planet single-handedly - so long as you choose the default settings of £0.18 per kWh. That's an expensive tariff and I'm not sure you can easily buy electricity at that price in the UK (it's something like 26 cents US or 20 cents EU). The software also chooses what I believe to be a very high power consumption setting for your PC, but you can adjust this and the price per kWh for electricity.

The power consumption setting is something you will struggle to accurately set without plugging in a power meter to your PC and Display, so there's another £15 you need to spend in order to accurately ascertain your green hero level.

That's the problem, the software with the Ecobutton tells you what you have saved in money and CO2, but the default settings are exaggerrated for current power tariffs and efficient desktop PCs. In that regard, this button is more con than cool.

The Ecobutton: To save the planet, buy something unnecessary

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but has one drawback, 21 Oct 2008

This is a great way to save energy: when you walk away from the computer, just press the button and it instantly sends the 'puter into standby. When you return, just wobble the mouse and the 'puter instantly springs to life.

Mainly. Just occasionally I find it hangs instead of restarting, and takes some minutes to come back to life, which is frustrating. It happens only occasionally - but one star off.

But all in all, a great green buy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Save even more money!!, 12 Aug 2009

Don't buy this, click Start > Control Panel > Power Options > Advanced

Under the "When I press the power button on my computer:" drop down, select "Standby"... Done!

Your power button does the job of the ecobutton. When you want to shutdown, do so via the Start Menu!
