Product Description

Product Description

This Halcyon Classics ebook collection contains three important works by Roman poet Virgil (Publius Vergilius Maro): his masterpiece THE AENEID, THE ECLOGUES, and THE GEORGICS. Both original Latin and English translations are included in this edition.

In THE AENEID, Virgil tells the tale of Aeneas, a refugee from Troy who wandered westward, dallying with Dido in Carthage before slipping away to found Rome. Virgil based his work on and was heavily influenced by the ILIAD and the ODYSSEY of Homer.

Includes an active table of contents for easy navigation.

This unexpurgated edition contains the complete text, with minor errors and omissions corrected.

Excellent 10 Sep 2011
By Thomas
This collection is possibly the best value item I have ever seen on Amazon. Conisisting of a mammoth collection of Virgil's works, in both English and Latin, this could easily have been released over the course of six books as other publishers do. As a student of Classics, I have often seen individual books of the Aeneid sold for ten times the cost of this book, in the original Latin; this goes to show how obscenely good value this version actually is.

This is a completely plain text version of the text: no glossing or grammar help is given within. In addition, no line numbers are given if you would want to use this version to reference lines. However, the text, perhaps as a result of this, formats extremely well, and no fault can be found for this volume.

For either a Latin reader, or someone with no knowledge of the language, this is an extremely good buy and is unbelievably good value.

No Table of Contents 26 Aug 2011

This DOES NOT contain a table of contents for each of the three books. You can go from the Aeneid to the other books, but you have to plow through each individual book without the aid of TOC. If that doesn't bother you, then it may be worth it to you. But as a general rule you always have to be careful when buying from Amazon, as they don't seem to check the publishers' claims beforehand. Better to save your money for a good hard copy edition with scholoarly notes and, of course, a table of contents.

Latin original is an appendix for the English translation 7 Aug 2011

The book presents the entire English translation, which is then followed by the Latin original.
Unless you are 100% fluent in Latin, it pretty much defeats the entire point of getting the book with English and Latin.
An interlineal or alternating paragraph approach would be 100x more useful.
