Product Description

CD Description

Four years in the making, Analog Africa finally presents the second volume of Africa’s funkiest band, the mythical Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou. Volume One (The Vodoun Effect - Funk & Sato from Benin’s Obscure Labels, 1973 - 1975), released at the end of 2008, was a collection of amazing lo-fi recordings produced for various labels around Benin. Volume Two showcases superbly recorded tracks, courtesy of the EMI studios in Lagos, Nigeria, one of the best studios in the region. All tracks here were recorded for the mighty Albarika Store label and its enigmatic producer, Adissa Seidou.

The idea for this compilation was born five years ago when Samy Ben Redjeb, Analog Africa's founder and compiler, first heard the addictive funk track “Malin Kpon O”, which was originally released in 1975 on Albarika Store. That discovery triggered the compiler's curiosity and what followed was a long journey through the musical history of Benin and the history of its most important ambassador, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou who started as a children's entertainment group and went on to become one of the greatest bands of their era.

During the period presented here - 1969 to 1979 - the mighty Orchestre was without any doubt one of Africa’s most innovative groups. Capable of playing any style of music, the band moved from traditional Vodoun rhythms to Funk, Salsa or Afro-beat seamlessly and quickly became the powerhouse of Benin’s music scene, backing most of Africa's stars touring the country, such Manu Dibango, Ernesto Djedje, Bella Bellow, as well as supporting an array of local composers, such as Honore Avolonto, Antoine Dougbé and Danialou Sagbohan. Those astonishing combinations can be heard here: Afro-Beat, Sato, Funk, Sakpata, Psychedelia and Latin sounds all mixed into a heavy hypnotic sound - Les Echos Hypnotiques.

Considering the status of Fela Kuti it's unbelivable that a band as incredible
as the Poly Rythmo have been submitted to dust for so long. This is even better
than "The Vodoun Effect", and easily wins the price of reissue of the year.
When The Orhestre Poly Rythmo lock in on the groove they are capable of making
an elephant shake his giant yash like the tail of an alligatooor in heat!

I'm in awe! Songs like Houe Djein Nada, Agnon Dekpe, Gan Tche Kpo, Malin Kpon O
and Azon De Ma is right up there with Fela.
The music is a highly original and hypnotic combination of traditional rhythms,
funk, soul, latin and afrobeat. And at times the organ bring a psychedelic rock
n roll feeling to their music.
Even the weaker(as in less amazing!)songs have some astonishing moments.
The rythms are both infectious and highly complex. Sensational stuff!

This is the fourth time Analog Africa comes up with a regular goldmine, and as always
they deliver a beautiful, informative package in addition to the music.

Get it! Twice!!

Love the album, great dance music and loved the history provided with the CD. Love that you can order something relatively obscure so quickly

REISSUE OF THE YEAR! 5 Dec 2009

With rock n roll bands you talk about kicking ass, but with the afrobeat/funk
bands it's about shaking it, and when The Orhestre Poly Rythmo lock in on the

Absolutely superb A+ album 13 May 2010
By Tyler Roy-Hart - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I agree with everything the first reviewer says both in general and in detail, except - and I know this is heresy - I like this better than Fela or any other African music I have heard. GASP! I know, I know. But I do. It's more sophisticated but funky as it can be. The guitar leads are simply ridiculous and the overall musicianship level is absurdly high. This album is MUCH better than the "Kings of Benin Urban Groove" disk, I think, and is in fact my favorite African music album in any style that I have heard to date.

Nostalgia 22 July 2011

This is an album close to my heart. I spent 40 years looking for it and to find a re-issue on Amazon has
been the highlight of the year!
In the 70's, they were all the rage in Western Africa. Warmth, rythm, fun, sincerity.
Loved them then, love them now.
