Was given to me by my boyfriend and never fails to make me feel good. No matter what the weather or what youve been through, when this pours through the speakers it feels like a gorgeous summer's day. Its great for music lovers who want to listen to artists not so well known, for those that want to start a love affair with soul or established fans of soul that want a good compilation. Some tracks sound surprisingly modern and there are no 'filler' tracks. So shut up, sit back and feel dam good!

Pure soul, not as "hot" as some of the Numero Uno releases 17 July 2007
By collegemoney - Published on
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
What you will find here is "classic 70's soul" in all its many incarnations of the period-- plenty of falsetto vocals and other things that will remind you of famous artists contemporary to the time. In other words, little known artists performing songs in the mold of the Dells, O. V. Wright, etc. Nate Evans (who I believe graces the cover) is a ringer, vocally, for Lou Rawls. I admit I didn't find this as hot as some of the other Numero Uno releases such as Belize City Boilover and Grand Bahama Goombay, which are enlivened by their Carribean ethnic influences. Therefore the 4 stars instead of 5. But if you are looking for some pure 70's soul sounds, this is for you.

Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda 18 May 2007

Coulda, shoulda, woulda. An apt description for the Twinight Label. They're recordings were inpressive enough, the trouble was they didn't recieve the promotion and respect they deserved. It's good to see Numero helping to rectify this matter

rare soul gems from Chicago 11 July 2013
By Donald E. Gilliland - Published on
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
The Chicago-based Twinight (and Twilight) label is best known for being the home of soul legend Syl Johnson, who later recorded for Willie Mitchell's Hi Records label in Memphis. This 2-CD collection highlights the "other" recordings that Twinight put out from 1967-1972. And folks, this compilation is positively bursting with sweet soul and funky grooves. With 40 tracks, there is something for everyone, including a few torrid instrumentals. Another jaw-dropping collection of soul rarities that the Numero Group has rescued from obscurity. Thank you!

As for the "Lunar Rotation" part of this album title, the booklet inside this collection explains that this was the late night period on local radio stations when airplay was given to "high school talent show winners, major label cast offs, minor label upgrades, and girlfriends with decent voices ... the DJ's call it lunar rotation, broadcast lingo for radio limbo, all-night airplay for 45s with no chance of making the charts, a nice time for a disc jockey to make good on that fifty dollar handshake. It's hope, but not much more. Between 1967 and 1972 Chicago's lunar landscape was littered with Twinight labeled 45s."

The booklet goes into detal about the label's history and the recording acts represented on this CD. There are not any Syl Johnson songs on this compilation, but the essay in the booklet explains his crucial importance to the label, not only as its sole hitmaker, but its foundation. By leaving the label in 1972, the booklet notes, "Syl Johnson had gone, taking with him the label's only source of income, and subsequently the label roster's mainline for new blood."

It's a shame that the label didn't enjoy more success. Certainly, the songs on this compilation are good as anything else you'd hear on airwaves at the time. Artists as impressive as Renaldo Domino, Stormy, Velma Perkins, Nate Evans, and Josephine Taylor belong up there with their better known peers. Fans of 60s and 70s soul will find this collection very thrilling.

Funky soul, brother 21 April 2009
By J. VanDenEng - Published on
Format: Vinyl
A friend of mine hipped me to this label (NumeroGroup) by making me a copy of this Twinight's Lunar Rotation double album on CD. I was not much of a soul music fan at that time- the only soul music that I REALLY REALLY loved was my Marvin Gaye "What's Going On" record. I tried getting into some of the other mainstream/classic soul artists but none of them could do me like Marvin. Well that all went out the window when I popped Twinight's Lunar Rotation disc 1 into my system. WOW! What an amzing collection of underground soul/funk circa Chicago 1967-72. And disc 2 is just as great. I've never heard of any of these artists but I was/am blown away by the quality of music in this collection. I promise you, you will not be able to sit still and listen to this album. I like it so much, that I went right over to my local record store and bought the 4xLP set on vinyl. It includes 13 extra tracks (not on the CD version) and it's all wrapped up in a nice package with history and artwork/photos. These tunes are dripping with passion/coolness/love/musicianship. Amazing. Simply amazing. Thank you Numero Group for digging these diamonds up and making them readily available. Buy this album, you won't regret it. If you aren't hooked by the time the first two tracks of disc 1 are finished, you had better check your pulse and/or your hearing.

This is one of the best in a very good series. Great soul songs you've never heard, very well mixed and great (HDCD) sound quality.
