Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Among the pianists of the swing era Jess Stacy stood out as the man who could do it all. An immaculate soloist, he was also a much admired section player with big and small bands and this 25-track collection gives the best possible picture of his work from 1935 to 1945. For several years Stacy was associated with Benny Goodman and there are four titles here to commemorate that period, three with the full band and "Opus ¾" with Goodman's quartet. On the orchestral "Roll 'Em" Stacy produces a rolling boogie style. After leaving Goodman he became a member of the Bob Crosby's band to be featured on such pieces as "Vultee Special", Ec-Stacy and the Bob Cats' version of "Spain". All three are included here. In 1945 he formed his own big band which featured his wife Lee Wiley as vocalist, but the project was short-lived and is remembered now only by the two titles "Daybreak Serenade" and "It's Only A Paper Moon", both here. Throughout his working life Stacy had an affinity with the Eddie Condon school and there are examples of him playing with such men as Pee Wee Russell, Bud Freeman and Condon himself. --Steve Voce

EC- Stacy 23 Mar 2002
By "pius_paulus_iii" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Well, were can I start. This is some of Jess Stacy's Best work. Stacy is best remmembered as the Pianst for Benny Goodman's own orchestra as well as Bob Crosbys orchestra. He was a fine pianst and this is some of his best work. There are some selections form his Goodman days (Madhouse and Roll 'em) as well as a few more from His Bob Crosby Days. However this CD is mainly his solo work, the highlight being his excellent version of "the world is waiting for sunrise" with Isreal Crosby and Gene Krupa. This CD is ended with One of only 2 Recordings by Jess Stacys short lived orchestra, Daybreak Serenade. I would highly recomend this CD to anyone who is a fan of BG ,Bob Crosby or Stacy in General.

Jess Stacy rarities 25 Nov 2010

Jess Stacy was one of the best of the swing-era pianists. I have a large collection of jazz recordings, and am a working jazz pianist as well as a jazz broadcaster, but I realised recently that I had hardly any recordings of Stacy.
After fruitlessly searching the record shops, I found this rare item on Amazon. I'm delighted with it - a good price, too.

Swing era master 8 Sep 2005

This ia a great album of music of this period. There are many good pianists of this era but Jess Stacy's inventiveness separates him from the rest.
