An excellent opening adventure., 18 April 2006
This review is from: Eberron: Shadows of the Last War (Paperback)
Reviewing a good adventure is always difficult. I am yearning to recount my party's exploits -- what they did, who they met, where they went -- and yet, at the same time, I would hate to spoil this adventure for any potential players out there.
So, let it simply be said that this adventure ticks all the right boxes. Written by Keith Baker, creator of the Eberron Campaign Setting and winner of the 2002 campaign setting search, it skilfully captures every facet of that world. In just 32 pages, you will find enough action, intrigue, and exploration to keep your players clamouring for more. Balance is strictly maintained throughout, with imaginative and exciting battles that are challenging without being overpowering. The adventure can easily be interwoven with the other adventures in this story arc (namely, Whispers of the Vampire's Blade, and Grasp of the Emerald Claw). Opportunities abound for every class of character to fulfil their potential, and the cinematic tone was strong enough to provoke one of my players to exclaim 'wow, this feels so much like Indiana Jones...'!
This was, for me, the best adventure in the story arc; Whispers of the Vampire's Blade would undoubtedly have capped first place, were it not for a disappointingly-rushed ending. Eberron was new to all of us, but this setting helped us to settle down into the setting with ease, and we are now devout advocates of the world. Having played many published adventures, and having therefore experienced a gamut running from the good to the bad to the ugly (Deep Horizon, anyone?), I can confidently say that Shadows of the Last War restored my faith in professional writers -- long may it last!

An excellent introduction into the world of Eberron!, 10 April 2006
This review is from: Eberron: Shadows of the Last War (Paperback)
I've not yet had a chance to run this adventure with my gaming group as yet, though I've read thru it cover to cover. It certainly seems to tick all of the boxes in terms of elements that make the Eberron campaign setting unique; lots of edge-of-the-seat action sequences, a lot of NPC interaction, and scenes and moments that really stand out from the norm. It even has an interesting new monster type in it. Eberron is a brilliant campaign setting, and this is a great showcase for how the world looks and feels. This adventure is designed for 2nd level characters, and is designed to continue directly the story that began in the Eberron campaign setting book, "The Forgotten Forge". Though if you haven't run this adventure, with some minor adjustments, you could drop it into any Eberron campaign. THUMBS UP: An excellent start to a great campaign New monster; Glass-covered Zombie Dwarfs! Great for an inexperienced DM to run with inexperienced PCs looking for their first serious crack at playing D&D THUMBS DOWN: Could have used some more artwork to show to the players Overall, not really much is wrong with this. I can't wait to play thru it, and I will post another review later once I have given the story a good run. I would recommend it to people looking for an exciting opener to a campaign, and there are plenty of adventure hooks or even whole sections of the book that experienced DM's can build from!

Shadows of the last modual, 16 Nov 2004
By a reader - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Eberron: Shadows of the Last War (Paperback)
While I have not yet run Shadows of the Last war with my PCs, I have looked over the adventure and found much of it to my likeing. The story line is continued relatively smoothly from the previous modual (Forgotten Forge), and a new group of foes for the adventurers are introduced, making for an exiting and well developed adventure. The adventure's primary merrit is, however, the sense of Eberon it imparts. With its technology like magics and cinamatic battle scenes, Shadows gives a DM wishing to learn a bit more about Eberon before writting his(or her) own adventures just the sort of model and set of possible adventure hooks one needs. In adition to this, I found the adventure easily modifiable, enabling me to edit out parts I did not particularly like and replace them with some of my own, with minimum difficulties. My one gripe concerning Shadows is the fact that the principle villians are not those implicated at the end of the Forgotten forge. While this is merely a matter of opinion, and I know that I said that the adition of the new enemies is an overal good touch, if I where a player, I would likely be somewhat dumfounded to discover that the oposition I faced in the last adventure is present only in the start of the modual (albeit in an exelently talored encounter). Over all, the Shadows is a great adventure for an Eberon campagn, and I recomend it to DMs in search of inspiration, bearing in mind that much of it may need to be tweeked in order to make it run best with your party.

Shadows of the Last War, 8 May 2009
By W. Vieira "Bill the Thrill" - Published on Amazon.com

Perfect starting point for an Eberron campaign. Can be used as a sequel to the adventure provided in the Eberron Campaign Setting. Good interior black and white art, but it's not as breathtaking as the ECS. (Steve Prescott illustrates the adventure's three sequels!) Keith Baker is always a good read. Alternatively, an issue of Dungeon Magazine, released at about the same time as this product, also contained a sequel to the ECS adventure. If you play Eberron, you'll want this module. (Also includes a short story by Keith Baker.)

Race to uncover secrets buried by disaster, 8 May 2010
By Usererror41 "Oyishness" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Eberron: Shadows of the Last War (Paperback)
"The ruined House Cannith citadel of Whitehearth holds the key to constructing a terrible magic weapon. Agents of the Emerald Claw will stop at nothing to recover the ancient device. As malevolent forces hunt for the artifact, resourceful heroes battle the perils of the Mournland to reach Whitehearth first and discover the secrets that lie within."
This adventure for four 2nd-level characters is designed to follow the events of the Forgotten Forge adventure found in the Eberron campaign setting, but it can easily be run as a standalone adventure.
All in all, Shadows of the Last War is a well written adventure that pits the party against one of the most nefarious organizations found in Eberron.
