Product Description

What is an eating disorder? What are the symptoms? What causes them? And is full recovery possible? Eating disorders are a growing issue - at least 2 per cent of females are now struggling with an eating disorder and studies amongst some groups such as teenage girls reveal much higher rates. This accessible and practical book helps readers to come to a full understanding of eating disorders and the various stages involved in recovery. It is essential reading for sufferers, their family and friends and also the interested reader. Writing from her experience of working with sufferers and drawing extensively on case histories, Dr Middleton explains what eating disorders are and why we develop them. Crucially, she offers guidance for setting out on the road to recovery.

About the Author

DR KATE MIDDLETON is Director of Anorexia and Bulimia Care, a charity working to support all who suffer because of eating disorders. She has a professional background in medicine and psychology and a specialist interest in eating disorders and associated problems.

Buy It!!! 24 Sep 2007

This book just blew me away. As someone who has dipped into this type of book before, I was expecting an understanding of the issues and some helpful information. What I never expected was the breadth of insight and the fantastically engaging style of writing. It seems highly unlikely with such a subject, but it really is an enjoyable and compelling read.

Dr Kate Middleton writes as if she is talking directly to every one of her readers - never condescending or jargony, always friendly, realistic and practical. At the same time it's clear she writes with immense authority on the subject. She inspires a much needed confidence and positivity in an area typically so dark and secret; she generates a certainty that anyone suffering from an eating disorder is not alone, and that real recovery is truly possible.

I completely recommend this book to anyone; male or female; sufferer or concerned onlooker; those with a professional interest, and those who are simply interested. It's like a breath of fresh air on the subject and it will transform the way you see things.

This is a fantastic book which I highily recommend. It just approaches eating disorders in a pratical easy manner. This means is it easily understood and enlighting for people who have eating disorders, their friends/ familys and proffessionals. It not only deals with the pratical advicebut helps aleviate that gripping fear that having an eating disorder that some suffers can have.
It covers -
what are eating disorders,
the different types and symptomns
Pitfalls of eating disorders and the recovery process
How to get help
Planning a recovery route
About food and eating
Advice for families and friends

It also has pratical tips and small tasks to let people see how an eating disorder is affecting them and to face the fear of recovery.I have tired a few of these with people and can see how they really help.
I have read several books about eating disorders and they can be really heavy and overwhelming. However this one is a short, easy book that I have loaned to several people who love it too.
Eating disorders are highily complicated subject and it shows how good a book is that it makes a complicated subject so easily understood and offers hope.

very helpful... 16 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
...I was still in a lot of denial about the way that anorexia was starting to take control of my life. This book really helped me in the beginning to recognise and understand what was happening to me and most importantly how much I needed to ask for help if I was going to be able to begin and sustiain the journey towards recovery.I would really encourage anyone who thinks that either they themselves or a close friend or relative is having any difficulty around their relationship to food.Even if you still feel you are only at a very early stage, things can snowball very quickly, don't wait until things get much worse, which if you don't change course they most certainly will.I wish you well in this difficult journey, whoever you are and however you feel right now,you are worth the effort.

Heavy bias towards anorexia nervosa
This book is a quick read and gives a good overview of eating disorders in general.

However, it has a serious flaw in that it has a heavy bias towards anorexia nervosa. Read more
