Product Description

Review

"This book fills a gap in the books available on eating disorders in that it addresses a wide range of potential eating disorders in young people... This is a reassuring book without negating the seriousness of an eating disorder and is written as though sharing knowledge with equal partners in the process of helping a child" - Signpost, March 2005

Product Description

Eating problems in children and teenagers are very common. Yet myths about the problem abound and it can be very difficult to separate the facts from popular beliefs; unusual or disturbed eating patterns can be understandably bewildering and distressing for parents.

Whatever aspect of your child's eating behaviour is causing you concern, this book will help you understand some of the more common reasons why problems arise, and will give you advice on what you and others can do to manage the situation.

Written by experienced clinicians, this new edition of Eating Disorders: A Parents' Guide is dedicated to clarifying the subject of eating disorders. Combining an accessible and straightforward introduction to the subject with practical advice, this book represents the first step towards diagnosis and treatment.

Case-studies are used to help parents to understand their children's experiences of this complex and challenging subject and sensitive advice is offered on a range of issues, including:

  • how to identify a complete range of eating difficulties
  • how to approach specific problems
  • where to seek help and treatment.

This book will be welcomed by anyone who is concerned about the eating habits of their children and will be invaluable to professionals working with those suffering from eating disorders.

This book is a must for any Parent whose child has an eating disorder. It is also a valuable resource for paediatric nurses and other health professionals who work with this client group. Clearly written, it covers the broad spectrum of eating disorders from Anorexia Nervosa to Bulimia.

The Chapters are clearly laid out and the book can be used as a resource to dip in and out of but i would agree with the authors that it is best to sit down and read it in order and then dip in and out as needed. It is very easy to read, containing little medical jargon and can be read in a couple of days.

Descriptions of each disorder are given along with an overview of predisposing and precipitating factors. But the most helpful chapters are those that deal with coping on a day to day basis. They offer strategies that parents and health care professionals can use to help maintain their own sanity and help these youngsters ensuring consistency of approach.

At the end is a list of useful addresses where parents can seek further help and support. The book is non-judgemental and offers parents a message of hope, that though the journey is long and hard there is light at the end of the tunnel.

This book is a beautifully written description of eating disorders and their treatment and of how the sufferers feel. It is reassuring to parents and explains these "incomprehensible" disorders. Each disorder is described with descritions of individuals, contributing disorders for the disorder and best of all, ways to help/cope. As a physicican treating patients I have found it extremely useful for families - in reassuring them also and giving them hope and understanding in what can be a difficult process. My favourite book to recommend. My main complaint is that I have to come to the British web site to get more copies as they do not always come back!

Brilliant. Every parent should read this before their children reach the age of 10! I wish I had.
