This is not a book for the faint of heart, like most of Ms Duffy's books, but what you will find is insightful, perceptive writing, sometimes achingly so. Duffy has a unique lyrical style that not only makes her a sheer joy to read but also ensures that her witty, on target writing finds a most appreciative audience. Buy this book.

Painfully accurate about our ambivalent, messy relationships with lovers, friends and family. The central character is not always easy to like (I doubt she's meant to be) but all to easy to recognise - if you haven't got into her situation yet, you'll have friends who have, and found themselves behaving in ways that they would never have expected. And without being a morality tale, the book confronts Lisa with the consequences of her actions - though not necessarily how or when you would expect it ....

With "Eating Cake", Stella Duffy has provided a brilliantly cynical view of modern day relationships. The book follows the life of Lisa, a successful business woman who seems to have the perfect life ... husband, friends and work. But somehow this isn't enough, and she searches for more, with devestating consequences.
The beauty of any Stella Duffy novel (and in particular this book and "Singling out the couples") is that she somehow creates characters for whom sympathy and dislike can easily co-exsist. Lisa is selfish, yes ... but the desires that she has are similar to those that many of us feel at various stages in our life ... is she strong or weak for acting upon them? Couple this with an impressive use of language that can make a single sentence work on many levels, and you have a fair view of what the novel accoplishes.
I would strongly recommend that anyone with a single cynical bone in their body read this book ... and then, if they have not already done so, check out "Singling out the couples". I look forward to the next Duffy novel in this vein.
