5.0 out of 5 stars Have a piece of this cake.., 4 April 2003
By A Customer
This is not a book for the faint of heart, like most of Ms Duffy's books, but what you will find is insightful, perceptive writing, sometimes achingly so. Duffy has a unique lyrical style that not only makes her a sheer joy to read but also ensures that her witty, on target writing finds a most appreciative audience. Buy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Damn near perfect, 3 April 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Eating Cake (Paperback)
Painfully accurate about our ambivalent, messy relationships with lovers, friends and family. The central character is not always easy to like (I doubt she's meant to be) but all to easy to recognise - if you haven't got into her situation yet, you'll have friends who have, and found themselves behaving in ways that they would never have expected. And without being a morality tale, the book confronts Lisa with the consequences of her actions - though not necessarily how or when you would expect it ....

5.0 out of 5 stars The work of Satan, but a must-read all the same., 27 Nov 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Eating Cake (Paperback)
A translucent dissection of consuming passions and consumer mores, Eating Cake is the most wicked exposition of contemporary urban values since Brett Easton Ellis's 'American Psycho'. Okay without a psycho or any Americans , but the same poisonous observations and neon wit. It's 'This Life' or 'Attachments' without the dizzying camera movements, just acute, lifelike representations of the have-it-all-want-more culture of bourgeois Britain set aganist truthful and vivid portrayals of London life. Duffy paints from the same hypercoloured palette of the impressionsists, a Pollock possessed, her words cut like sharpened scalpels, the plot hurtles like one of those coal wagons in the tunnels in Scooby Doo where it turns out that the museum curator did it. Establishing a whole new and paradoxical genre: The Amoral Fable, 'Eating Cake' is both the zenith and the nadir of the Modern(e). With more than enough mental meat to satisfy a million literary dinner parties. I wanted to throw it away but couldn't put it down. Make up your own mind. Read or burn it, but BUY IT. Duffy is a mad genius. I am not.
