Review

'Simon Majumdar knows his sh** ... Plus - the bastard can write' -- Anthony Bourdain, author of KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL 'Majumdar writes like a dream and eats like a pig. It's a killer combination. Eat My Globe is a very funny, very hungry book, much like its author' -- Jay Rayner 'EAT MY GLOBE is part travelogue, part personal memoir, part food journal and part performance art, as Simon Majumdar travels the planet and consumes the full spectrum of cuisine - from the haute to the horrifying - establishing himself as the Indiana Jones for the foodie set' -- Andrew Friedman, co-editor of DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME 'Simon adores pulled pork, yet pulls no punches in this passionate, refreshingly honest and delicious journey. Travelling with him on his gut-busting world tour is a rollicking good time ... Read only with a well-stocked fridge; you'll get hungry' -- Kathleen Flinn, author of THE SHARPER YOUR KNIFE, THE LESS YOU CRY 'EAT MY GLOBE is a culinary tour de force that mixes an infectious enthusiasm for the world of food with a celebration of the people who prepare it. Majumdar is without question the world's most enthusiastic gourmet. His love of eating - or rather, feasting - is so infectious that we never turned a page without feeling an overwhelming urge to eat great food, roam the Earth, and read another page' -- Andrew Rimas and Evan Fraser, authors of BEEF 'This book made me quite patriotic about our over-boiled vegetables and cauldrons of stew' -- Sunday Express 'A snappy and entertaining book ... although this is an account of Majumdar's international love affair with food, it's his deep affection for those with who he shares it that really nourishes the soul' -- Daily Telegraph 'Ballsy, often hilarious ... His experiences and descriptions, however brief, of the global gastronomic sublime, such as his sunset supper in the Filipino countryside, are appetite-whetting, and his take-no-prisoners attitude and opinions match the project's ambitions. He champions street-food surprises over more urbane examples of cuisine, while his affection and gratitude for the individuals and families met and the hospitality received amply humanized both his wanderings and writings. Majumdar's comic-yet-brazen voice carries the reader swiftly and winningly from foul to fowl in a book that's funny and delectable' -- Publishers Weekly 'Excellent foodie travel memoir ... Majumdar is often genuinely funny and can spin a good story ... highly readable, and ofren highly entertaining but to be avoided if you are on a diet' -- Clover Stroud, Sunday Telegraph 'If you're a slave to your taste buds you'll love Eat My Globe' -- Wanderlust 'As Jay Rayner says, Majumdar "writes like a dream and eats like a pig". It's a riot' -- Tribune 'Through the exuberant enthusiasm of Majumdar's writing we share his excitement' -- Waterstones Books Quarterly 'A very satisfying read ... there is a lot to enjoy' -- Matthew's Table 'One for serious foodies ... Majumdar successfully brings to life the tastes and experiences associated with his global quest ... but this book takes the reader way beyond that' -- Adventure Travel

4.0 out of 5 stars Great holiday read, guaranteed to make you hungry, 21 May 2009
Most food bloggers, food critics and generally any self-confessed foodies are terrible food snobs. They can't help it. They simply love food a bit too much - it is such an intrinsic part of their lives and family history that to encounter someone who doesn't see the point of eating well or, even worse, serves them sub-standard fare, leaves them confused, indignant and personally offended.

Simon Majumdar is one of these people - really really food obsessed to the point of madness. But despite my misgivings when I started reading this book (his tone was initially a bit pompous), I quickly warmed to him and found parts of the book laugh-out-loud funny. He didn't hold back about any person, place or meal encountered on his travels, and was wonderfully and brutally honest about everything from cod sperm sushi to the `quality' of Australian wine. (I can also only presume he never hopes to make friends with an Australian wine-maker, who were really given the full hair-dryer treatment.)

As Simon's journey continues and he experiences the boundless generosity and hospitality of people from much poorer nations than even the UK, he seems to become more humble and appreciate the simpler things in life - gone is the man whose life's happiness appeared to centre on the quality of a Martini, as he munches on lamb kebabs at a roadside shack in Mumbai, raves about a meal cooked by Senegalese women and tucks into a homely meal of roast chicken with a Californian couple he has only known a few hours.

On one hand this book is just a really fun, easy, informative read, perfect for a holiday (especially as you can put it down and wander down the beach in search of some tasty local food when you get hungry, which will be every 5 minutes). But it's also a fascinating insight into how food can unify people from completely different cultures and backgrounds. Simon needed only to post a message on his blog enquiring about culinary must-dos at his next destination, to be quickly offered a place to stay, a home-cooked meal and a free tour by a fellow food blogger. A mutual love of food seemed to be all that was needed for two complete strangers to bond and trust each other without question.

Definitely recommended, give it a go!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stock up on Rennies before reading., 15 April 2009
This is an easy-to-read, entertaining and informative book. It takes you with the author on a world search of amazing food, drink and fantastic sights but on it's way reveals absorbing stories and fond childhood memories. It has something for everyone with a strong stomach. I loved this book from front to back.

2.0 out of 5 stars trivial entertainment, 27 April 2009

A fairly shallow and superficial dip into what the globe has to offer. If the purpose is to entertain then this might be your book, but for a proper global food guide look elsewhere.

The item arrived promptly and was well packed. My only slight criticism was that the book had been described as "as new", but the cover had been bent. Read more
