Great book. It tackled my entire philosphy on eating. I read it in the throes of diet dispair. I'm one of those who eats healthy most of the time, and yet can never lose any weight. I hoped it wasn't another of those "Simply eat bland food and consume fewer calories than you burn with excercise" books. Yeah, easier said than done! That's like telling a nicotine addict to simply not smoke. (And you can't quit food cold turkey...)

This book gets you thinking about little things that even the most health-minded among us do to sabotage our diets. (Like using a dessert sized portion of dried fruit and candied nuts as salad toppers) The wakeup calls are scary and amusing, and the fixes sound so appetizing that I can't wait to go to the store to put them into practice.

I'm 5'10". In the first of February (2013) I weighed 234 lbs and I needed to change so I did something drastic. I quit drinking all soft drinks and all fruit juice cold turkey. My doctor had already warned me about artificial sweeteners.
In just over two months I had lost 20 pounds, so I decided to tell my husband what I had been doing. As much as I love him this guy didn't notice when I donated my hair to Locks of Love. The first thing he did was buy a big bag of my favorite candy bar and leave it on the kitchen table.
I had hoped he would join me.
On June 7, 2013 I had a check-out and official weigh in. I'm down to 198! Do you know how many years it's been since I've weighed 198?
But then something even better happened: I FOUND THIS BOOK!!!
I said I gave up juice, but I didn't give up fruit because I knew I'd need the fiber. This book said I was right, but it also said I was wrong about a lot of things. Because I live in a small town I may not be able to find everything it recommends, so I've started a shopping list for our next trip to Nashville, or maybe Evansville.
And I have a further disadvantage because I hate oatmeal. I love Cream of Wheat, but that doesn't fit the guidelines; it cooks too quickly. You'll have to read the book to understand what that means.
I love the idea of mandatory snacks, sample menus; as a matter of fact I can't find anything NOT to like.
The weight I shed was based solely on changing my diet. The first twenty pounds were the quickest. I know I'm in for a battle if I want to lose another twenty. And I do.
This isn't just a book to me. It's a weapon in my arsenal and I will use it as such. It's already given me more confidence than I had before.
I'm taking swimming aerobics now!! I'm in a smaller suit and could be in an even smaller one before the summer's over.

My husband has struggled with weight loss for many years and has needed to lose over 100 pounds. He has tried dozens of different diet books, and has always ultimately failed as the plans were too restrictive, too extreme, and not sustainable in the long term, not to mention impossible for the whole family to eat together. Rachel's book has truly been a life changer. My husband has lost over 80 pounds following the advice in Rachel Beller's book. My husband was diabetic and the medication that he was taking was no longer effective, and he was told that he would need insulin. He had had high blood pressure and out of control cholesterol despite prescription medications. Today, he is off all of prescription medications and has a clean bill of health. He gave the book to his sister, who has now lost over 70 pounds, and his mother who is in her seventies and she has lost 30 pounds that she has struggled to lose for over a decade. Even though, I do not struggle with my weight, it has transformed how I eat and I fell so much better. I can not recommend this book more strongly. It contains all the advice and guidance that make it easy to eat healthier, and be healthier from the day you start reading. Thank you Rachel!

I've read a lot of books on healthy eating, and most are pretty predictable (eat less sugar, eat more fiber, etc.). That is, if I ever got past the first few chapters; most aren't designed for casual reading. In fact, they're pretty tedious, so I keep them around as references. This one is different. Although it contains the same sugar/fiber/etc. advice and it's written by a nutrition expert, it's actually fun to read, and it continuously surprised me with stuff I didn't know, like the fact that most "wheat" bread is really white bread that's been dyed brown. Who knew? And because of Beller's advice, I may never eat a California Roll again. At the same time, "Eat to Lose, Eat to Win" is also something I'll keep around because of the recipes and shopping guides. I only wish it had come out before all my holiday meals.
