Product Description

Product Description

When national food writer and cookbook author David Ricketts was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2001, he became a member of the "reluctant brotherhood" forced to make life-altering decisions to beat this life-threatening disease. After surgery, Ricketts used his journalistic skills to research the food and lifestyle changes that can help prevent and slow the growth of prostate cancer, which is expected to affect a record 250,000 men in 2005. The result is "Eat to Beat Prostate Cancer Cookbook", an everyday eating guide for guys that optimizes prostate cancer-fighting foods and eliminates foods believed to contribute to cancer. The book features 200 recipes from snacks, drinks, and sandwiches to main course meals. Ricketts' personal experience brings a human and supportive "been there" perspective to a health problem that is emerging as the "disease of the moment" as the PSA, a simple blood test, leads to early diagnosis in younger men.

About the Author

David Ricketts is the author or co-author of a dozen cookbooks, including Mexican Flavors, with Richard Sandoval (STC, 2002). Ricketts is a prostate cancer survivor and lives on Cape Cod.

David Ricketts, the author, is a cookbook writer who was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He investigated a low-fat, high fibre, no-red-meat diet at the suggestion of one of his doctors. The diet he outlines is strict, but it is not as extreme as many cancer diets. It includes fish, alcohol, and even some desserts!

He has worked hard to include the foods most helpful in fighting this form of cancer, and all the recipes we have tried so far have been enjoyable. There are some difficulties, -some of the foods he mentions are unusual, and not all of them are easy to get hold of in Britain. His estimate of how long his recipes take to prepare has also proved somewhat optimistic. However, all the recipes we have tried have been tasty, and some of them are really special.

Good food and good medicine: a wonderful gift for caregivers or spouse 29 Mar 2006
By T. F. Reynolds - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The standard American diet is associated with significantly more prostate cancer than Asian diets, seen by the fact that the sons and grandsons of Asian immigrants develop prostate cancer more frequently as they integrate into American culture.

As a physician and medical oncologist, I am often asked about diet by my patients and their families.

This book is the best one for people concerned with prostate cancer; it is up to date on nutritional research, yet the food is good and easy to prepare. A wonderful gift for any spouse who wants to know what they can do to help. The price is great too.

The website (prostatecancercookbook.com) has great articles and web links for patients and families.

Eat to Beat Prostate Cancer Cookbook 12 Jan 2007
By Chef Mary - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a great cookbook for anyone to use. Easy to follow recipes, foods that are very healthy and spices that enhance the flavors.

Our cholesterol has gone down and that was not the focus of purchasing the book.

Recommend without reservation!!

Highly Recommended! 24 April 2007
By Susan McQuillan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
David Ricketts wrote this book because he developed prostate cancer; I cook from it because it's chockful of fabulous tasting, easy-to-prepare, and super-nutritious recipes. And because, as a nutritionist, I know that basing a diet on the foods featured in this book is a smart choice, not only for men who are trying to beat prostate cancer, but for anyone who is striving to stay healthy.
