My wife asked me to "go get some stair gates" once our monkey learned to crawl and terrify us on a minute by minute basis. I ended up buying this one together with Summer Infant's more expensive
Auto Lock Wood Pressure Gate and this Lindam item is very obviously the lesser of the two - and not just in price.
To begin with, it's adjusted by turning a nut. Unlike the Summer Infant gate, which has four large knurled hand screws, you must use a spanner to fit and remove the Lindam. The spanner is supplied but it's annoyingly small and uncomfortable and moreover is just something else to lose. We've found our gates need regular tightening and adjustments and where it takes five seconds to tweak the Summer Infant it takes five minutes to sort the Lindam.
Then there's the problem of the lower stopper, which when rotated can prevent the gate clicking shut or ensure it opens in one direction only. Our experience is that we would much rather have a lower fastener because our monkey has already learned he can bend the bottom half of the gate out by at least an inch if he pulls (or pushes) hard enough. That's easily enough to get his fingers in between wood and metal, and I dread to think what'll happen if he does. In contrast, the Summer Infant item latches with a 'click' into place at the top and at the bottom meaning all sides of the gate are secured - I'm astonished no other reviewer has mentioned this rather startling deficiency on the Lindam.
Lastly, we have a dog. While we can use the lower catch to stop the gate clicking shut, the spring mechanism still keeps it closed and this thwarts every effort made by non-humans to get through. We had to prop the gate open with a chair at night - as already mentioned, dismantling it on a regular basis is really not an option - and after only a week the spring lost all its strength so the gate now flaps about in the breeze. A method of removing the effects of the spring when not needed will be near the top of any pet owner's wishlist.
In summary then:
PROS
Good looking and well made.
Top latch is a doddle to use and secures with a satisfying 'ker-chunk'.
CONS
Must be fitted, adjusted and removed with the aid of a spanner.
Bottom edge of the gate not secured in any way. A major hazard for fingers and feet.
No way of disconnecting the spring-shut mechanism (e.g. to allow pets through).
Most tellingly of all, would I or my wife recommend YOU as a parent buy one for your home? NO.
