2.0 out of 5 stars Temporary break, 21 Sep 2007
By Alf Alfa (Barnsley, UK) - See all my reviews
Allen Carr's book has helped me to stop drinking. Six times, so far. That's the problem. It hasn't helped me to stay off the sauce. The longest I've managed is three months. It motivated me to put down the bottle. But it hasn't stopped me from picking it up again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Early days but the book seems to have worked for me at least., 8 Dec 2008

I disagree strongly with Russian rabit's view on this book. Fair enough if it didn't work for him, it certainly seems to be working for me however. I find it's message to be a very positive one - I was absolutely dreading giving up alcohol even though I knew it was something I had to do, perhaps it worked for me because I really wanted to give alcohol up and I already had many negative thoughts about it. This book showed me the way to burst through and trample on the stanglehold that drink had on me and on top of that it makes you feel positive about yourself in doing so. I've never been to an AA meeting - but from what I've read about them their message seems to be a lot bleaker, that the drinker themselves is flawed and needs help from a 'higher power'.

I'm nearly 38 and had been drinking since the age of 16. I've more or less always drunk more than I probably should to varying degrees. In your youth you can get away with this to a certain extent. I went from a very fit guy in my mid 20s to a not so healthy guy in my late 30s. The past 2 years my levels of drinking got far worse. Hardly a day went by where I didn't have at least 2 drinks - some days a lot more. I tried to cut down - I even managed to stop for a whole month - of course the following month I drank more than ever.

I've only stopped drinking for 3 weeks - I haven't had any major withdrawal symptoms - except for experiencing the odd urge to have a drink. Perhaps the only part of Allen Carr's message I might disagree slightly with it is now and then you might need just a bit of willpower to resist that little demon but so far these 3 weeks I've found it easier than the time when I quit smoking 6 years ago.

I now view my life without alcohol as an adventure not as something to be dreaded.

5.0 out of 5 stars Skeptical Reader, 25 Jun 2006
This book came with a lot of claims that I found hard to believe. That it takes no willpower, no cravings, no feelings of deprivation to stop drinking forever. But, as I read the book, I saw what he was getting at. It really isn't that hard to change your thinking about alcohol. If you are trying to stop drinking, and AA, rehab, willpower or therapy isn't helping, try this book. I am much happier now that I don't have to drink alcohol ever again.
