More About the Author

Elinor Greenwood is a writer and editor of children's books. She speaks Mandarin Chinese having done a Chinese degree at Leeds University and spent many years in China. She worked at DK for over 10 years and wrote 'Easy Peasy Chinese'. Her most recent book is a fun-filled book for children called 'Fun and Easy Chinese'. Elinor is keen to promote Mandarin Chinese and China into children's all-round education. She says 'I am particularly proud of my latest book as it includes everything that children like doing, stickers, drawing, creating, while learning how to read, write, speak and understand basic Mandarin at the same time!'. An understanding of China and Chinese could be a very useful skill for children in the future too.

This is a lovely book, suitable for the absolute beginner. Combining the CD and the book really helps vocab to stick. It introduces words in a way that enables you to build your own simple phrases. It looks like a book that is aimed at children, but I think it would suit anyone looking to learn the very basics of Mandarin. It will equip you with enough vocab to talk about yourself a little and to get by on a holiday in China. The book itself is about A5 size, and the CD comes slotted inside the front cover, so you could easily fit it in your suitcase.

"You must be really brave to start learning Chinese"...is the comment I usually get when i tell people I'm learning Chinese. This book makes it not exactly easy but at least possible. Colourful and attractive, the book explains why Chinese is how it is. The CD helps master the tones and sounds. There is lots of insight into Chinese culture like the horoscopes. Ideal for beginners.

I thought learning even basic chinese would take ages but i learnt the majority of this book in only a couple of weeks( doing an hour a day mind you). This is not a depreciation of the book, far from it, it covered all the basic things you need to get started, and you could get by on holiday without having to speak english once with this. Easy Peasy chinese is laid out perfectly to stop you feeling intimidated by all the new words, and the cd helps you get pronounciation perfect. It is also full of intresting culture facts about china, and also helps you learn characters. I would recommend this to everyone who is starting brand new with chinese, as it is the best book I have seen yet.

Easy-peasy Chinese: Mandarin Chinese for Beginners (Book & CD)

Highly recommended for the beginner. Takes you from the basics to getting around in the country and meeting the people. Excellent tape and very supportive manual.

I have a Chinese daughter in law and now a Chinese Brit grandson in Taipei; have tried to do the home learning thing with a couple of other systems, not very successfully. To be truthful I have not yet had time to get into the disk for this one; however the book is JUST what you need to get started in LIVING in a Chinese speaking environment - they start with a simple index, explain how the anglicised scripts came about, and a clear pronunciation guide for vowels and consonants. They go on to how the Mandarin scripts are formed, with simple illustrations for brush strokes. They then take you to simple number rules, 'travelling around' vocabulary, shopping, eating and socialising. I really think that I shall make progress with this book and disk.

And I think useful for young people as well. (I'm 71!)

If you have no knowlage of this seemingly hard language you cannot do better then begin with this book, its very well writen and the CD is first class. This course is easy to follow and after a while you realise that the Chinese language is not that hard to learn and above all its fun, buy enjoy and impress the staff at the local Chinese takeaway I did!

My daughter learns Mandarin Chinese at school and I bought this so I could learn with her. The book and CD make it very simple and enjoyable to learn the basics. My daughter (9) enjoys it a lot more than i thought she would, I thought I would have to suggest it as something to do if she was bored, but she asks to do this instead of having a bedtime story - WOULD RECOMMEND!

For an adult, the format may seem unsophisticated. However, if like me, you are seeking absolute basic detail about Mandarin sounds and Kanji symbology, you will find the book well organised, interesting and constructive. The headphones icon indicating which pages are detailed in the CD, is a neat feature.

Being normally very critical, the only minor comment I would make which does not detract from a 5* rating is that for some items on the CD, there is an introduction which is irritating to have to re-listen to over and over if you wish to replay that section for parrot fashion learning.

A marvellous basic introduction, which I shall easily pass on to my grand-daughter
