Product Description

The first ever DVD release of this classic British portmanteau comedy drama scripted by Muriel Box Be careful what you wish for: as this compendium about the perils of getting rich quick shows, money doesn t always buy happiness. Here are four stories that show the down side to high living: a family scoops the pools but it nearly tears them apart and a mild mannered clerk wins the jackpot with unhappy consequences; greed and temptation turns honest people into crooks, while a suddenly wealthy man finds himself missing his old life. Mixing laughter, tears and suspense and starring some of Britain s best loved actors (including Jack Warner, Petula Clark, David Tomlinson, Mervyn Johns and Dennis Price) Easy Money is a true classic of the British screen. Extra Features include: Booklet notes and Best of British trailers

Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Black & White, Booklet, Interactive Menu, Scene Access, Trailer(s), SYNOPSIS: Easy Money is a satire of that most venerated of all middle-class British traditions, the football pool. The film is divided into four separate episodes, illustrating the effects of the football pool on the "average chap." Among those who participate in the pool in hopes of winning the 50,000 pound jackpot are the Stafford family: husband Phillip (Jack Warner), wife Ruth (Marjorie Fielding), son Dennis (Jack Watling), and daughter Jackie (Petula Clark). Other interested parties are the Atkins clan -- Herbert ($Mervyn Johns) and Agnes ($Joan Young) -- and lovers Pat (Greta Gynt) and Joe (Dennis Price). Among the huge cast of supporting players, Edward Rigby stands out as the hapless Teddy Ball. Critics of the time noted that Easy Money was faintly reminiscent of the all-star 1932 Hollywood film If I Had a Million. ...Easy Money

5.0 out of 5 stars Not short on entertainment! 2 July 2011

The short story compendium became a popular genre in 1940's British films, and sandwiched between two of the best (1945's Dead of Night and 1949's Train of Events) came Easy Money, a look at the football pools and how they change, for better or worse, people's lives.
As with all these films the stories vary in quality and in my opinion the best here are the first and the third. In the first story a typical suburban family with all the usual problems win the pools, which instead of solving, only makes their problems worse. Jack Warner as father and a very young Petula Clark head a good cast.

I really enjoyed Greta Gynt and Dennis Price in the third story about an attempt by a night club singer to defraud the pools with her boy friend, who is employed as a coupon checker. Greta sings a great song, "Lady Spiv", her costume and hair style very like Rita Hayworth In "Gilda"!!

As with all this series, the print used is pretty good.

5.0 out of 5 stars great 3 really good films 19 Aug 2011

These are the best of british no doubt, you have 3 films all about different people and how they deal with winning and trying to win cash from the football pools , if your smart you will notice a very young Petula Clark before she was a famous 1960's singer.

These films are really first class shows the best British Actors at their best and doing it so well. There are funny bits as well really just like what you would think people would do in real life that alone makes a great film. You will not be disappointed with one i can tell you.

So watch it and have fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent ! 27 Nov 2012

I love this film . Funny and sad stories make an entertaining mix .
I giggled at Greta Gynt's slightly off - key singing , marvelled at why Jack Warner's family lived in such a large house ( when they were supposed to be ' ordinary ' folk ) , loved the amusing Orchestra scene and felt sorry for a character I won't mention as said character has an unfortunate pools win . All this and Bill Owen ( in a small part ) , warning against fiddling with your pools coupon .
This film portrays a way of life now largely forgotten ( except we have The National Lottery now . )
Filmed shortly after the War , it is a must for nostalgia buffs and anyone who appreciates ' Portmanteau ' films . Highly recommended .
