A friend who works as a carer recommended this book to me. She needs to produce simple, appetizing meals for old people as part of her profession. Ryland Peters & Small have put together a brilliant guide to the much underrated British cuisine. Each dish is accompanied by a photograph of the highest quality to show what the dish looks like, and unlike online resources there are no references to unobtainable ready made brand substitutes. If you are going to have only one book in your cooking library, this is the one I would recommend.

I have now bought one of these for a lot of my friends and family. It's got some great easy-to-cook recipes for some good traditional foods.

If British cuisine is up your alley, as it is mine, then you won't find a nicer guide for it. The recipes are simple, interesting and, and this is an important "and" as far as I'm concerned, they all have pictures! NICE pictures.
This is a book that will make you want to eat, will make you want to cook, and will offer you the proper pointers and tips to get from cooking to eating to blissfully burping and smiling like an idiot.
This isn't the perfect cook book (Hence the missing star). A few, a very few but still some, of the recipes do contain mistakes. That's the risk you take in a book written by more than one cook. But if you keep your wits about you, this book will be the one book you keep coming back to both for inspiration and for basically good satisfying food.
Just to give an example: I tried the maids of honour recipe and brought it in to work. Though simple as anything to make, it's so big on "wow factor" that the girls at the office all said I should go into the catering business.
Buy it. You won't regret it. :)
