Book Description

7 Mar 2012 Hitler's War Machine
"A war is not lost until you consider it lost." Generalfeldmarschall Erich von Manstein The ferocious battles for survival fought by trapped German forces in Russia have become synonymous with that most terrible of all military campaigns. Shortly after the war the personal experiences of those who had fought in the battles were collected together as the German Report Series. These reports include invaluable information from impeccable sources on the pockets formed at Klin, Velikiye Luki, Cherkassy and Kamenets-Podolskiy. Also included are contemporary reports featuring German encirclement tactics, and an in-depth feature on the Kiev operation. This new compilation is essential reading for anyone interested in discovering the real experience of the German forces trapped in Russia. This book is part of the 'Hitler's War Machine' series, a new military history range compiled and edited by Emmy Award winning author and historian Bob Carruthers. The series draws on primary sources and contemporary documents to provide a new insight into the true nature of Hitler's Wehrmacht. The series consultant is David Mcwhinnie creator of the award winning PBS series 'Battlefield'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another good primary source 23 Aug 2011

This series is really building well and at that price it's hard to beat. This is the best account I have read of the the escape of trapped German forces from the pocket at Velikeye Luki. Well you'd expect that as it consists of accounts by survivors . Indespensible stuff . Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic depth and sources 11 July 2012

Found this product to be a very interesting read, the survivors accounts from battles were especially informative, and in places quite touching. I would recommend this to anyone looking to glean a bit more knowledge on the subject, as I think you would struggle to find the soldier's recollections of the conflict anywhere else. Good stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Encirclement & escape 8 Feb 2013

Written as a "matter of fact" and how to get out of trouble! type manual. It would seem that sometimes it was tactically planned to cause one's self to become surrounded. Not sure the plan actually worked in Stalingrad (it didn't) but a good informative read, no regrets buying it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dull as dishwater 29 Jun 2013

Gave up trying to read this book. I have a great interest in the second world war especially the battles that took place on the Eastern Front. But I have to say this book bored me to tears. I also read 'servants of Evil' by the same author and again found it a dull book. I couldn't 'dive in' and feel lost in it like other books it seemed very amateurish and no proper order to it.
