Product Description

Review
For all its impact, World War I remains shrouded in myth, mystery and mourning. It exists as a series of disjointed images: old photographs and fragments of poems; devasted landscapes; anonymous soldiers scrambling over the top; above all, the endless cemeteries of the Western Front. 'The History of World War I' returns that tragic conflict to the sphere of history. Based on a half-century of sophisticated research, incorporating state-of-the-art graphics, the six volumes of the series present the war on land, at sea, and in the air in a global context, and in human terms. -- Dennis Showalter

From the Publisher
With the last few men who served in World War I now dying out, and the 90th anniversary of the Armistice coming in November 2008, there is no better time to revaluate this controversial war and shed fresh light on the conflict. On the Western Front the fighting raged for nearly four and a half years, but this was only a part of what was truly a world war. From the Falkland Islands to the lakes of Africa, to the former German colonies in the Pacific, and the battles along the Isonzo river in Italy, the six volumes in the History of World War I series recreate the battles and campaigns that raged on land, at sea and in the air.
Combining accessible text written by leading academics with over 200 photographs per volume sourced from unfamiliar archives. the series provides a fresh perspective on the conflict that was much complex and varied than what we learnt at school. In this volume on the Eastern Front, for example, the full story of what thousands of British (and later American and French) troops were doing in Revolutionary Russia in 1918 at the invitation of Leon Trotsky is told with the aid of some rare photographs.

First some info;

Back Cover copy
- Provides a detailed guide to the background and conduct of the conflict on the Eastern Front, up to and including the Russian Civil War and the Russo-Polish War.
- Illustrated with over 200 stunning images, detailing the fighting men, their equipment, weaponry and the commanders of both sides.
- Contains over 20 full-color maps describing the major battles and campaigns, from Tannenberg and the Masurian Lakes through to the Battle of Warsaw in 1920.
- Describes the initial German and Russian successes on the Eastern Front, the 'Great Retreat' of 1915, the renewed optimism of the following year, the two revolutions of 1917 and the Bolshevik struggle against the White Russian forces and the newly-created Polish state.
The History of World War I series is a six-volume military history of the 1914-1918 conflict.

When I open a book like this, the first thing that strikes me is the graphics,...or lack of them.

This book smacks you in the eyes with graphics;they are superb. Beautifully simple but exquisitly informstive colour maps; they tell the story almost by themselves. Very well chosen photographs and illustrations; the balance of photos, maps and text is well nigh perfect. You just want to get into it either from beginning to end or just to dip in.

The WW1 Eastern Front finally gets the book it deserves. For almost 100 years WW1 was, for Western readers, exclusively trenches and 'over the top', Somme, Ypres, Paschendael, etc. Thousands dying for a few yards, a mile or two of ground, day after day. A remorseless grind of horrifying absurdity.For Western readers.

For Russians, Eastern Europeans, and the Germans who fought in the East, it was another war entirely. For almost 100 years, this war has been ignored as if it never happened - until now. Fortunately, since the Fall of the Wall and the '90s, awareness of the Russian/Eastern European 'part' in European history, esp. the World Wars has been growing in both East and West. This book is a very fine consequence of this.

Once you have enjoyed this eye-opener, my suggestion would be to go to 'Battles East: A History of the Eastern Front of the First World War' (Paperback) by G. Irving Root. Hardly any graphics but more detail in the text. Finally, for an 'alternative viewpoint' go to the classic 'The Eastern Front 1914-17'by Norman Stone. Some of it (by the authors own admission) is almost unreadable, but, with a background from the first two books, it is possible to extract some interesting insights from Prof. Stone's work.

This book should be a 5 star. [Amazon, editing a review should include the ability to change the rating. How can this be done?]
