I had doubts when I purchased this book that it would be comprehensive enough to fulfil my needs but having looked through it, was pleasantly surprised at its content. It includes several Eastern Eurpoean languages and I now know that they are all closely related. Whilst this book would not meet the needs of the serious linguist, it is excellent for the holidaymaker or occasional traveller to Eastern Europe. The pronunciation of words which are full of adjacent consonants and therefore strange to the English speaker, is explained clearly. I can recommend this book to anyone thinking of taking a holiday in Eastern Europe.

3.0 out of 5 stars Caution recommended 7 Mar 2003
Format:Paperback
I bought this book primarily for my holiday in Croatia......and it's just as well that I'd bought a study guide for Croatian as well.....Grammatical differences exist between Croatian and the local dialect of surrounding regions of the former Yugoslavia........and these were not indicated in the phrasebook-had I followed exactly what was written in the book, I would have been mistaken for a Serb...not a good way to ingratiate yourselves with the locals!
On the plus side, as with 'Central Europe' , lonely planet manages to pack in all the tourist situations you could find yourself in, with the phonetics written directly beneath the native language text, with a pronounciation guide at the beginning of each language subsection.
After a week in Croatia, I found I had increased confidence in approaching the locals and was pleasantly surprised at their remarks at how well I could speak for a foreigner. This was important, as I was arriving at harbours/ bus terminals looking for somewhere to stay -you'll soon discover that accommodation touts litter these places during the summer months....I plan to use it again this summer as well!
Thus, a snip at the doors this book can open for you! Buy now!

4.0 out of 5 stars the only serbian phrasebook i have found 23 May 2002
Format:Paperback
I found this book extremely useful as i am trying to learn the serbian language. It will save me carrying my dictionary and study book around with me when i go.I wanted simple phrases that get straight to the point of what i want to say.It covered all the essential conversational elements when meeting people, when asking for food, directions, buying things, emergencies and medical problems.Even though i only brought this for the Serbian language i am sure the other languages will come in handy oneday. Great value for money and lots of pages on each language.I love this book and would reccommend it to anyone who wants to make themselves heard when going to Serbia.
