I have the print version of this book but did not want to carry it around with me on my 10 week trip so decided to invest in the ebook instead. It was the worst decision I have ever made.
Firstly, the functionality is horrible to say the least. The table of contents is so basic it is a joke and the entire book is almost impossible to navigate - to get to a country/city, you need to go through several menus to select what you are after. Then once you are in the country/city, there are no other options to navigate (such as to sights/map/eating/sleeping/travel) so you need to keep scrolling through page after page to find what you want. There are various links back to the map for sights, but when you click on them and go to the map, there is no option to go back to the page you were on so you have to once again, scroll through page after page after page. The search function is also useless. You would think that a search for Lake Bled would bring up the page for Lake Bled as the first result, but no, it brings up every single page that mentions Lake or Bled in order that they appear in the book, not order of relevance.
The recommendations leave a lot to be desired. I'm not sure if the writers/contributors have a vested interest in the establishments they recommend or are paid to do so, but it would certainly explain the lack of quality in the places they recommend. Two places in particular we visited (in Ljubljana and Prague) were gimmicky tourist dives that dished up such rubbish food I was shocked especially after the glowing recommendations they had been given which specificaly referred to "local" and "authentic" food/dining experience. With so many restaurant options in these cities and with only a limited budget, I rely on LP's recommendations to sort out the best of the lower budget options and to get you away from the touris traps, but in both instances, I was bitterly disappointed when the recommendations did not come close to the actual experience. I have found much better places (quality and price) on my own and I will never be taking a recommendation out of any of their guides ever again.
The worst part of this ebook though is the lack of content when compared to the print book. If you are looking for a substitute, then this is not it as less than half of the content from the print book is included. A number of times I have tried to refer to the ebook for something I read in the print version only to find it is not even in the ebook. And LP have the audacity to charge the same price!! What a joke!
I will certainly not be buying any further lonely planet ebooks, and based on this experience, I may reconsider ever buying one of their guides again.
