Book Description

17 Sep 2004
In EASTERN BODY, WESTERN MIND, chakra authority Anodea Judith brought a fresh approach to the yoga-based Eastern chakra system, adapting it to the Western framework of Jungian psychology, somatic therapy, childhood developmental theory, and metaphysics. This groundbreaking work in transpersonal psychology has been revised and redesigned for a more accessible presentation. Arranged schematically, the book uses the inherent structure of the chakra system as a map upon which to chart our Western understanding of individual development. Each chapter focuses on a single chakra, starting with a description of its characteristics, then exploring its particular childhood developmental patterns, traumas and abuses, and how to heal and maintain balance. Illuminated with personal anecdotes and case studies, EASTERN BODY, WESTERN MIND seamlessly merges the East and West, science and philosophy, and psychology and spirituality into a compelling interpretation of the chakra system and its relevance for Westerners today.
  • Revised edition of the groundbreaking New Age book that seamlessly integrates Western psychology and the Eastern chakra system, including a new introduction from the author.
  • Applies the chakra system to important modern social realities and issues such as addiction, codependence, family dynamics, sexuality, and personal empowerment.
  • Previous edition has sold more than 55,000 copies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your usual new age drivel 3 April 2006
    By A Customer
    Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have to be honest, when I first got this book, I expected it to be either an onslaught of tasteless commercial new age jargon, or a polarised attempt to assert the superiority of eastern over western philosophy. Once I started reading, however, I was immediately drawn in, if not captivated, by the author's balanced, intelligent and insightful style, and her ability to relate the eastern chakra paradigm to western systems of developmental theory and personal growth, from Piaget to Maszlow to Jung. I am presently about 300 pages into it (in chakra 5 of the 7) and reading it has been a genuine journey of self-discovery for me. I can enthusiastically say that this is one of the most fascinating and soul-stirring books I have ever read and I can already feel the reflections emerging from it have had a life-changing impact upon me. Not a "how to" book, but a true "make you think" book. This one stays on my shelf, and I will buy many copies as gifts for others.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Very Practical 8 Jan 2011
The first thing I thought when I opened the box was "wow this book is big." Unfortunately it's not long because its full of information but long because its hopelessly long winded. Its clear the writer is an expert in her field and the content was interesting, but not unlike a text book. It was very descriptive with no practical advice on how to work with all the information you were just given. There are a lot of books on chakras out there and with hindsight I probably would have got a different one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grounded insights 10 Jan 2010
Out of many books I have read, this is one which has given me a more balanced insight into the workings of the chakra system and has really helped confirm how addictions can affect you on the body, mind AND spiritual level. Well-written, concise, which I can't help but feel raise questions for the reader, without being too fluffy or 'out there'. Particularly for those that are beginning to look at their spiritual side, new to the meaning of chakras and how they relate to the experiences felt on a spiritual journey. Did I find this book or did this book find me?! Both! Namaste.

    5.0 out of 5 stars A very useful resource 1 Nov 2010
It has been a long time since I read this book, because I was forced to give it away when I was backpacking - it's heavy. I would highly recommend it to people interested in healing, particularly the blend of Eastern teachings on the chakras and Western ideas on psychology. It is good for both understanding your own journey, and being a participant on the journey's of others.

This is not your typical New Age handbook. It's a textbook, and has a lot of detail to get through.

I have read very few books in this field that were more lucid or instructive.

By Graham Mummery TOP 1000 REVIEWER

There are a number of things that Western Science (and certainly many scientists) dismiss -often on theoretical grounds- yet when asked for details about they seem to know little. The Chaka System is one such thing. A system which might be described as a psychosomatic system of medicine, though this in itself does not do it justice. To be fair sometimes Western proponents are not always the best advocate for this either, talking vaguely about "energy" and "balances." There is also another problem in assessing this, because it comes out of a culture with different assumptions to my own.

So why bother? Firstly, the fact that the Chakra System has been used for possibly thousands of years by a large number of people does, at the very least, suggest there is something of value in it. True this is not infallible, but then nor is anything else. In training to become a psychotherapist, I have found also that sometimes, for example, people complaining of aches in the heart area may be having emotional problems, and people with throat problems may have problems communicating their thoughts and feelings. This is consistent with what the Chakra system might indicate.

Of course what is on offer is much more sophisticated than what has just been said here. It is some if this sophistication that Annodea Judith provides in this book, as this is, by far, the most scholarly account of the Chakra system I have encountered. Using various tools from Western Psychology, especially Jungian, she gives an account of the system explaining how the various Chakras on the body can reveal emotional and psychological problems that unfold in physical symptoms. Jung's psychology is, of course, controversial with some people, including those from the East who feel he misunderstood much from that direction.

5.0 out of 5 stars be prepared for a good book 5 Dec 2010
This is a book for life, it is straight forward understandable and informative, down to earth common sense, although i have read it very carefully and been back to it many times and believe i will for the rest of my life, i will say though it takes time to read it. i found i would have to stop and think about it, and then continue, or go back and read again to achieve that understanding, one of the few books i have read that makes sense,

One of my best loved most used books . Anodea along with Gill Edwards are two of the Authors I return to the most.
I trained as a professional Energy Healer, if I was running the school this would be one of my top recommendations to students, alongside Barbara Brennan, Alexander Lowen etc.
Having experienced this type of healing for myself I find this book accessible and easy to understand.
