Book Description

17 Sep 2004
In EASTERN BODY, WESTERN MIND, chakra authority Anodea Judith brought a fresh approach to the yoga-based Eastern chakra system, adapting it to the Western framework of Jungian psychology, somatic therapy, childhood developmental theory, and metaphysics. This groundbreaking work in transpersonal psychology has been revised and redesigned for a more accessible presentation. Arranged schematically, the book uses the inherent structure of the chakra system as a map upon which to chart our Western understanding of individual development. Each chapter focuses on a single chakra, starting with a description of its characteristics, then exploring its particular childhood developmental patterns, traumas and abuses, and how to heal and maintain balance. Illuminated with personal anecdotes and case studies, EASTERN BODY, WESTERN MIND seamlessly merges the East and West, science and philosophy, and psychology and spirituality into a compelling interpretation of the chakra system and its relevance for Westerners today.
  • Revised edition of the groundbreaking New Age book that seamlessly integrates Western psychology and the Eastern chakra system, including a new introduction from the author.
  • Applies the chakra system to important modern social realities and issues such as addiction, codependence, family dynamics, sexuality, and personal empowerment.
  • Previous edition has sold more than 55,000 copies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your usual new age drivel 3 April 2006
    By A Customer
    Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have to be honest, when I first got this book, I expected it to be either an onslaught of tasteless commercial new age jargon, or a polarised attempt to assert the superiority of eastern over western philosophy. Once I started reading, however, I was immediately drawn in, if not captivated, by the author's balanced, intelligent and insightful style, and her ability to relate the eastern chakra paradigm to western systems of developmental theory and personal growth, from Piaget to Maszlow to Jung. I am presently about 300 pages into it (in chakra 5 of the 7) and reading it has been a genuine journey of self-discovery for me. I can enthusiastically say that this is one of the most fascinating and soul-stirring books I have ever read and I can already feel the reflections emerging from it have had a life-changing impact upon me. Not a "how to" book, but a true "make you think" book. This one stays on my shelf, and I will buy many copies as gifts for others.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Very Practical 8 Jan 2011
    Format:Paperback
The first thing I thought when I opened the box was "wow this book is big." Unfortunately it's not long because its full of information but long because its hopelessly long winded. Its clear the writer is an expert in her field and the content was interesting, but not unlike a text book. It was very descriptive with no practical advice on how to work with all the information you were just given. There are a lot of books on chakras out there and with hindsight I probably would have got a different one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grounded insights 10 Jan 2010
    Format:Paperback
Out of many books I have read, this is one which has given me a more balanced insight into the workings of the chakra system and has really helped confirm how addictions can affect you on the body, mind AND spiritual level. Well-written, concise, which I can't help but feel raise questions for the reader, without being too fluffy or 'out there'. Particularly for those that are beginning to look at their spiritual side, new to the meaning of chakras and how they relate to the experiences felt on a spiritual journey. Did I find this book or did this book find me?! Both! Namaste.
