Biography

Founded by Martin Cradick after a 3 month visit to Cameroon with singer wife, Su Hart. There they lived and played music with a tribe of Baka Pygmy hunter-gatherers deep in the rainforest.

This trip inspired the award winning debut album, "Spirit of the Forest" in 1993 which led to the formation of the live band.

The rhythms of the Baka from the Cameroon rainforest somehow resonate in many culture's… Read more in Amazon's Baka Beyond Store

Product Description

CD Description

Baka Beyond, 'the original Celtic-African crossover band' release their 5th album, "East To West". This album is the culmination of 10 years of exploring the common ground between diverse musical cultures. It all started with the recording of theinternationally acclaimed "Spirit of the Forest" which drew from Martin Cradick's experiences playing music with the Baka Pygmies deep in the Cameroonian rainforest. Since then Baka Beyond has evolved into a dynamic multi-cultural live show featuring someof the most exciting performers from West Africa and the Celtic fringes of Europe. New sounds on "East to West" include the uillean pipes from Ireland, the kora from Senegal, songs that Martin brought back from his recent trip to the Congo rainforest andsome new Gallic songs seamlessly combined with one of the best African rhythm sections you are likely to hear.

Best Yet! 15 Oct 2002
Format:Audio CD
For those who are devotees of the music of Baka Beyond, not to mention their live performances, this CD is simply their best yet. All the familiar elements are here with a few new ones. Their fusion of Celtic with mainly African sounds and instruments is here achieved with even greater subtlety and sheer artistry than ever before. Every track is a gem; you just can't see the join even when tumultuous African drumming leads into Irish reels and slipjigs on the uillian pipes, the effect is startling but not incongruous. No one else can blend so many different sounds the way Baka Beyond do and, though they are definitely at their best experienced live, this album surpasses all their previous recordings for sublime melodies, stunning rhythms and enchanting - well, there needs to be a new term for the quality of atmospheric joy these musicians create.
I would attempt to describe each in turn but I would soon run out of superlatives and you might begin to think I were on their payroll!
For those who haven't heard Baka Beyond before, just buy this - you won't be disappointed - you will be uplifted.

Excellent! 30 Oct 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
As a budding djembe player myself i listened to this album and heard some amazing drumming, (the start of track 3) which will blow your mind. You will also find some other amazing instruments which stand out in brilliance such as the balafon on track 2 which is very mellowing, as well a the djembe, harp, violin, bass guitar, pipes...the list goes on.
Over all this is a stunningly good album of real music. Complex melodies are built up from many different instruments all layered on top of each other creating real music you are unlikely to find in any modern bands. If you want to open your senses to something new, possibly somthing you would normally scoff at, take some time to listen to this and be amazed by the musical talent.

Another Great One 1 Mar 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
It's good to see that Baka Beyond is not resting on its laurels but has come out with another great, creative CD. Existing fans should not hesitate to get this. I've only had one complete listen-through but this CD seems to have more of a celtic influence than predecessors which is fine with me. Plus the djembe playing is excellent and more pronounced. While the group stays true to its acoustic feel, I was happy to hear some experimentation with electric guitar as well. Congratulations to Martin Cradick and company.

Energizing and Utterly Amazing Music 24 Aug 2003
By Lisa Caiafa - Published on Amazon.com

I first heard Baka Beyond at a festival and was enthralled immediately. Their music is infectious and forces you to smile, sway and rock back and forth in your chair before finally being carried away and jumping up and dancing with full force in the aisle! Listen and be enchanted for yourself :)

Terrific fusion of Irish and Baka music! 12 Mar 2007
By S. Magliocco - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Very successful mix of African and Celtic styles. The rhythm and syncopation of the Baka percussion, and their complex singing, provides a surprisingly interesting background for Irish lyrics and melodies. This goes to show how cultural mixings can produce really show-stopping aesthetics.
