Book Description

26 Dec 2008 1606600036 978-1606600030
These Scandinavian fairy tales have had many interpretations through the years, but never have they been so beautifully illustrated as in this sumptuous edition. Golden Age artist Kay Nielsen, a master of fantasy, lavished the text with 25 intricately detailed color and numerous black-and-white images that glow with his phantasmagorical style. With 15 stories that include the popular "Billy Goat's Gruff," this is one of the most stunning children's books ever produced.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful! 20 Oct 2009
Format:Hardcover
This is an incredible book. It contains 16 very Norse feeling fairy tales of varying length, but no very well known ones (apart from a rather fabulous version of Billy Goats Gruff), which is exellent because, for me, they were pretty much all new and exiting.
The book was much bigger than I expected, measuring 18cm by 25cm, and is printed with quite large, widely spaced text on thick creamy paper.
The illustrations are utterly and compleatly stunning, with 25 colour plates and many black and white illustrations by the brilliant Kay Nielsen.
I would recommend anyone to buy it, especially for a child. I would probably have fainted with joy if I had been given this book when I was younger, and certainly now, at 17, I will treasure it for a long, long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost too good 7 Jun 2010
By M. Lawton VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The previous reviewers have almost said it all. This book is absolutely sumptuous and you will undoubtedly want to treasure it forever. It's so good that it seems churlish to criticise but actually I'd have been happier if it had been printed on thinner paper - this stuff is as thick as a Cornflakes packet and consequently the pages don't lie flat.

The illustrations are first rate and there's a good selection of stories - a couple of which are quite inspired but the text written in 1920, in a deliberately antique style, is a little leaden. Girls are often referred to as 'lassies' which tends to make me think of a certain dog.

On balance I reckon this a book for grown ups more than kids. However all this is nit picking and I can't bring myself to give a book this beautiful only four stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful 29 Aug 2009
Format:Hardcover
I am absolutely enchanted by this ravishing book. The illustrations alone are worth the cost. If you add on the clear, well-spaced printing and the simplicity of the story-telling, you have a book to treasure all your life.

If you have seen examples of Kay's illustrations this book will be a bitter disappointment ....they are small prints in black and white on a faint grey ground. Read more
