Perhaps James Runcie just writes my sort of books. In both Canvey Island and East Fortune tragedy strikes early and lives are changed forever. On Canvey Island we met a working class family struggling in 1950s Britain while here we have a privileged family from the Scottish monied class. Runcie shows the struggles of growing up, of coping with family life, of meeting our partners, having children, dealing with infidelity etc etc. All of life. And he also shows us people coming to terms with the changes that can come swiftly and shockingly to us all. And even if nothing untoward happens in their and our lives we ultimately have to cope with death. Runcie deals with all of this with gentle wisdom and not a little wit. Great writing too. I very much enjoyed the books as fiction but I also felt that Mr Runcie had helped me to understand more about my own life.
