5.0 out of 5 stars High Class Pictorial Record., 10 Mar 2001

This review is from: The East End Then and Now (Hardcover)
Though the purchase price of this book is on the high side, it does contain 530 pages on high quality A4 sized paper. The book is well illustrated and indexed.

Winston G. Ramsey is best known as a military historian. His technique has been to visit old battlefields and other conflict zones, photograph them and then compare the pictures to old ones taken at the time of conflict (hence the 'then and now' element), the supporting text explaining the relevant events. But in addition to his military speciality, Ramsey is interested in local history. Having strong roots in the East London and West Essex areas he has branched out to produce books such as this one. In East End Then & Now the modern photographs were taken in the mid-1990s with the equivalent historic illustrations variously spanning several centuries. Some of the text is taken from contemporary newspaper reports.

The illustrations alone make this book worthwhile - it's a brilliant browse. Covering the area from Aldgate to Leytonstone, this book tackles everything: crime, docks, fascists, gangsters, infrastructure, parks, philanthropists, slums, sport, suffragettes - it's all in here. Ramsey includes a particularly detailed section about the Blitz, not surprisingly given his background. This book is highly recommended for anybody looking to discover the history and the atmosphere of an area that has changed so much.

5.0 out of 5 stars A marvellous book, 16 Sep 2006
By Rose Dempsey - Published on Amazon U.S.
This review is from: The East End Then and Now (Hardcover)
This is a doorstep of a volume that will tug at your heart strings and give you a glimpse of London's East End in recent years and from way back when. If you are from the East End, and haven't been there in a while, the progress will make you yearn for simpler times. Ah but progress hurtles on.

Winston Ramsey took on a colossal task in putting this book together. Practically every page has photographs on it, there are interesting tidbits of information and lengthier pieces on the history of certain parts of the East End, or aspects of its being. He surpassed his own expectations, I think.

The result is a wonderful book that you will return to again and again, perusing the old photographs and looking for places and things that you remember.

This book is well worth the cost, it's value is so much more. I'm glad to have a copy of my own. I first saw my mum's copy a few years back and had wanted my own since then. For anyone with roots in the East End, or interested in East End history, this is a must! Buy it, you will not be disappointed.
