I found this book very helpful in my exploration of Victorian London. The photos are varied and clear and the text extremely informative without being overly academic. The book conveys the impression of poverty as well as hard work, destitution as well as celebration. Overall it is full of a people and time long gone but here depicted in an interesting and clear manner. However, if you just want to flick through an interesting fragment of London history then this book will fit the bill totally.

An enjoyable book - absolutely great pictures, it really captures the 'essence' of life, then in East London, my only wish is that my parents were alive to browse through!

Another lovely book of photos and information by Brian Girling. Photos and information are clear and interesting, a real statement of life in the East End, before the war destroyed many of its neighbourhoods and buildings.
