Book Description

June 1941, Isle of Dogs, London. In the dark days following the Blitz, happiness visits young Pearl Jenkins as she celebrates her marriage to Jim Nesbitt. But what should be a joyful occasion is marred when a fight breaks out between Jim and Ricky Winters, an unwelcome visitor from Pearl's past. And to Pearl's horror, the new beau of her wayward younger sister Ruby. Increasingly uneasy at staying at home when other men are off fighting for their country, Jim enlists, leaving Pearl at home - alone, pregnant, and at Ricky's mercy...Together, Pearl and Ruby must bring up baby Cynthia while struggling to make ends meet and dodge the doodlebugs. And all the time, Pearl must hide the dark secret she harbours, one which would tear the two sisters apart as well as her marriage. Then tragedy strikes both on the home front and in the trenches and Pearl is forced to fight like never before to keep her family safe.

5.0 out of 5 stars East End Angel 20 Nov 2010
By The BBs
Format:Paperback
East End Angel is the best family saga I have read so far this year. A cracking read and accurate descriptions of the period and location. Like all of Carol Rivers's other novels the plots tempt you into a fantastic world of East End family saga. A real page turner and the characters come alive from page one. I would highly recommend this novel as a great winter read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Eve of the Isle by Carol Rivers 15 Aug 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have just read the book Eve of the Isle by Carol Rivers (on Kindle) and I am just about to begin East End Angel, These are the first of her books I have seen and am really enjoying them. When searching for more of her Books, I can find six more but none of them are on Kindle...... could this be done soon? I have been reading a lot of books over the years, have spent a lot of money purchasing them and then when read having to take bagfulls to the Charity shops. But now I have my beloved Kindle, I can read to my hearts content without paying out a fortune and not having to find a place to store them. Please could we have more on Kindle. Thanks in anticipation Joy Whitaker

4.0 out of 5 stars East End Angel 30 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback
This is the story of a family living in the Isle of Dogs, East London, during World War Two. The Blitz is severe at first and in a breathing spell Pearl Jenkins gets married to an engineer called Jim Nesbitt. Jim is working to secure damaged homes but feels he should volunteer. When he does, they are separated for years at a time. Jim is always jealous of the fact that Pearl spent time with another man, Ricky, who went into the Navy, before she married him. He trusts Pearl but not Ricky. Later Ricky develops a relationship with Pearl's sister Ruby.
The progress of the war is told to us through news on the radio or Jim's experiences in North Africa and Italy. After Pearl Harbour London starts to see an influx of American soldiers. However the bombings continue via flying rockets which drop and explode when they run out of fuel, and a factory on the island explodes with no apparent cause demolishing Pearl's family home. She has a little girl by now and has moved to live above a shop, but her parents have to evacuate to the countryside, giving them a new lease of life and a better diet. Food is severely rationed and clothes are too, though secondhand clothes in the market are not on coupons so most people buy those. The hardship and everyday dirt and drudgery of living in a bombed-out city is well described.
I did consider that the main couple should have talked more and Pearl should have explained to her sister that no, it was not okay to bring Ricky to live with her in Pearl's second bedroom! I would also have liked a wider circle of characters as once Pearl had the baby she was stuck in one place and could do very little war work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Chacters are annoying and writing is weak 11 Sep 2012
By Janine
Format:Paperback
This book was nothing like I was expecting and I found the characters intensly annoying. I kept thinking just tell whoever it is the problem, just tell them why they can't do that! So annoying. It plods on and on and I found the writing wordy and weak.
The historical accuracy was ok but I just found it boring and wished the characters would just get a grip of themselves.

Good read but not exactly unpredictable!
To do the author justice I will try another of her

slow.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's okay
It was a good story idea, but felt a bit contrived. Ricky never really felt like a really menacing threat.
