East Is East is Damien O'Donnell's directorial debut, and he nails the raucous tone from the opening scene, a church parade where the Pakistani children must do some deft manoeuvring to avoid being seen by their Muslim father. At times such as these, the film is a straightforward comedy, and the children milk the cultural differences for every laugh they can. Yet the film takes a more sombre turn when Saleem balks at his father's insistence on arranging Saleem's marriage. Puri is magnificent straddling the line between lovable father and brute enemy as he demands that the others obey his will, and his performance can be difficult to watch as he metamorphoses. Sympathies toward the characters shift throughout the film, highlighting the superb acting of the entire cast. Ultimately, though, humour wins out, making East Is East a tremendously fun film. --Jenny Brown

WOW!!!!!! FANTASTIC FILM!!!!!
What a great film, excellent acting and well scripted. A must buy for your library. Hours of laughter into the insight story of an ordinary family torn between British way of life and eastern religion. Despite being a comedy there is so much truth in this film. My old copy got corrupted and so I bought new one without any hesitation. A very well watched film by my friends and family. YOU MUST BUY THIS FILM. SEE IT TO BELIEVE THE TRUTH!!!!!!

East Is East is nothing less than a masterpiece! This film is appealing to so many people for so many different reasons. I am someone who is not that keen on modern films - not least because of their violence, crudity and constant flow of unnecessary bad language; however, despite what can only be described as this film's appallingly frequent and 'filthy' dialogue, it incredibly does not detract from what is otherwise a very sensitive and altogether 'human' story, and indeed contributes to much of the comedy and humour of the movie throughout. Anyone like myself who is old enough to have lived through 1971 will appreciate the sheer mastery at which the cast were able to recreate that particular era to utter perfection. Unlike so many movies - including great ones, there is no 'pause' within this film where you are bored - not even for a minute whilst awaiting the next entertaining moment; each scene is superb! I've already watched this title six times to date, and will no doubt view it many, many more times to come, and still enjoy it. Highly recommended to all - even to those who do not normally care for bad language, and the odd bit of domestic violence. Enjoy!

Beautiful film with insight to day to day lives of British Muslim Family. This film through its humour shows lives of an British Muslims who are torn between modern values and their religion. In many ways it is more realistic than anything you ever seen before.
Buy it....., enjoy it...., laugh at it....its real...its hypocritical....its true....and funny. As well deserved 5 starts.
