Most Helpful Customer Reviews

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Jazzrook TOP 500 REVIEWER on 21 May 2011
Format: Audio CD
'East Coasting' is an overlooked Mingus album which was originally recorded for the Bethlehem label on August 16, 1957 shortly after his more famous 'Tijuana Moods' RCA sessions. Mingus assembled a wonderfully empathetic sextet including Jimmy Knepper(trombone), Shafi Hadi(alto, tenor), Clarence Shaw(trumpet), Dannie Richmond(drums) and the young pianist Bill Evans on one of his earliest recordings.
It must have been quite a fraught session with each track needing several takes(at least 16 for 'Conversation!) but the music comes across as subtle, sensitive and emotional. Mingus's marvellous, boppish 'East Coasting' makes an excellent companion album to the Latin-influenced 'Tijuana Moods'(see my review).
