Product Description

Bernard Moss has been working as a session musician around the North of England for as long as anyone can remember. His deft flute and saxophone solos have appeared on particularly horizontal records by Fila Brazilian, Mr Scruff and Baby Mammoth. Now he's branching out on his own, with a full-length album of chilled out sounds and dubby breaks. The overall sound is similar to label mates Baby Mammoth and Fila Brazilia--chunky, downtempo beats, overlaid with chilled electric piano keys, lush synth washes and dreamy flute solos. While so me tracks have a tendency to amble along without any real purpose, others are chill out classics in the making. "Billy Bibbit" is an acoustic groove of some distinction, featuring angelic vocal samples and wicked electric piano. "Retread Lightly", on the other hand, is simply beautiful. East Coast Chip Shop is no classic, but it does make an excellent alternative to the likes of Fila Brazilia, The Irresistible Force and The Orb. --Matt Anniss

This album is something I seem to have been waiting to hear all my life. It is both uplifting and anchoring at the same time (like a well-fitting new bra??!) Casa strasse and billy bibbit are my favourites, but I have a definite soft spot for the dream quality of skeptic manc. Let's hope this is the start of something really big from Moss.

Perhaps one of the most underrated trip-hop cd's of all time! 3 Nov. 2006
By Lawrence R. Thompkins - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I first heard of this cd when listening to the Nujazz chanel with dish network. I heard songs like, "Retread Lightly" and "Apple Pie Hubbub" which I liked, and decided to buy the cd from here, and I've been happy with almost every song on it ever since! CD really grows on you the more you listen to it, and most of the songs flow into each other easily.

If you like the sound of instrumental trip-hop, then you will surely appreciate the creativity Moss has put into this cd! If you like East Coast Chip Shop, you might also like these artist/cd's too:

Jon Kennedy's/Take My Drum to England, Bonobo's/Dial "M" for Monkey, A Forest Mighty Black/Mellowdromatic, and Nightmares on Wax/Carboot Soul....

Moss - East Coast Chip Shop 10 Mar. 2011
By scoundrel - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Moss' mellow debut EAST COAST CHIP SHOP has all the hallmarks of what made Pork a great label. Slow, funky beats, gentle melodies and a sense of humor. The quasi-Oriental tones and the harp intro on "Retread Lightly" give it a strange, dreamy quality, even as the tempo stutters slightly near the middle. "Moth" starts off with some scurrying percussion, while "Skeptic Manc" hits a more ambient groove. "Billy Bibbit" has a simple guitar intro that funks up soon afterwards. But other tracks go for more tried-and-true techniques: "Apple Pie Hubbub" is solidly standard. A nice album overall.
