At long last I managed to track down this novel, on which a 1970`s movie -starring Peter Cushing and Doug McClure- was based. It involves the narrator-David Innes- and scientist Abner Perry journeying in "The Prospector" deep into the bowels of the earth. At journey`s end a magnificent surprise awaits them - instead of solid rock or molten lava- they discover a prehistoric inner world five hundred miles beneath the earth`s surface. This alien world is populated by countless horrific beasts;giant cave bears, elephant-sized giant sloths, giant carnivorous amphibians and plesiosaurs to name a few. Ruling over this world of Pellucidar are the highly advanced reptilian Mahars whose eating habits will shock the faint-hearted! Protecting the Mahars are the gorilla-like Sagoths- vicious, brutal henchmen who roam Pellucidar capturing and enslaving the savage humans to serve their grotesque masters. David and Abner befriend a race of humans and must battle to escape the timeless underworld of Pellucidar and must face many horrors in their quest to emancipate the humans of Pellucidar from their cruel rulers. A completely gripping adventure from Edgar Rice Burroughs - the master of creating strange alien worlds and civilizations. The novel about the fantastical world of Pellucidar combines horror, adventure, deaths, duels and danger, escapes and even romance! Something for everyone! A rip-roaring yarn that is still - even 87 years after it was first serialised- a thought provoking and extremely entertaining read. From chapter to chapter you empathise with the protagonists as they face one horrific danger after another. Read, Enjoy and Escape to Pellucidar! You won`t regret it! I don`t - I can`t wait to return!
