Murderous monsters, scantily clad prehistoric playmates and telepathic pterodactyls inhabit the center of our world in this fantasy adventure about a manned "drill-craft" boring its way to the center of the Earth! There's more than lava at the Earth's core. There's also Pellucidar: an underground empire where gargantuan pterodactyls torture and enslave all humanoids - including the lovely Dia (Munro). But all that could change when a surface-dwelling scientist (Cushing) and an American businessman (McClure) drive their powerful "Iron Mole" straight into Pellucidar...stirring up a great deal more than dirt, rocks and lava! ...At the Earth's Core ( Edgar Rice Burroughs' At the Earth's Core )

I bought this two-film DVD set as I was reading the excellent autobiography of Tab Hunter, and wanted to work my way through many of his movies, aware of the off and on filming set anecdotes he'd painted. He's not the world's greatest actor, but 'War Gods of the Deep' sees him play opposite Vincent Price in a decent 1965 Jacques Tournier directed yarn, and both acquit well.

At the Earth's Core is the second of four cheap team ups between Peter Cushing (eccentric scientist) and Doug McClure (dashing hero), and again is a watchable romp.

There are no special features on the disc, but both movies are presented in widescreen, mono, with french and spanish language subtitles.

Core blimey! 12 Jun 2005
Format:DVD
Pardon the punning title, but I just had to do it. There are reasons for it later though...
This isn't half as bad as it could have been - think 70's Doctor Who and that just about sums it up. Entertaining kidstuff. In fact Peter Cushing (compare this performance to Tarkin in Star Wars from the same time - wow!)pretty much reprises his dotty performance as the good Doc here, accompanied by the ever solid Doug McClure (who always seems to lose his shirt sleeves) as heroic interest. Now, I wondered how my dad endured this garish romp back in a mid seventies matinee along with all the others, but a recent viewing revealed something I may have missed as a child . . . Caroline Munro. Never before has a greasy cleavage so captured my attention. It quite distracts from the fairly dull story, thank goodness. Once a boring tribe of jobbing actors appears in this film, it slows down a gear (there's a misfiring anti-racism undertone too). But to be fair, Mike Vickers' score keeps things going (marvellous electronica), the sound design is pretty creative, the monsters are great fun, and there is a knowing humour to the performances.
I can only give this three stars, because quite honestly it will only appeal to nostalgic buffers like me, 'retro' junkies and fans of Caroline Munro: if you want it for a modern kid I don't think they'd be quite as captivated or convinced as we were 30 years ago. Try 'Warlords of Atlantis', released on DVD at the same time as this for a more entertaining monster flick.

Two Victorian inventors, Dr. Abner Perry(Peter Cushing) and David Innes(Doug McClure) drill their machine, an iron 'mole', into the bowels of the Earth and encounter the strange, underground world of Pellucidar, where a telepathic race of bird-like reptiles rule over human slaves and where wondrous beasts and carnivorous plants can be found round every corner. In fact, what they find is a race of men in rubber suits, ruling over a group of British thespians in loincloths with equally rubber monsters and Caroline Munro's bountiful cleavage to be found round every corner.
Having made fun of this film, I feel it is my duty to make clear that I love every cheesy minute of it. Okay, Cushing doesn't give one of his best performances, recreating his dotty take on Doctor Who, and Doug is looking a bit flabby for an action lead, but that's all part of its appeal. The sets are wonderful, one should expect cut price monsters in an Amicus lost world film and there is a truly memorable experimental soundtrack from Mike Vickers of Manfred Mann fame.
Despite the two leads being rather forgettable, there is compensation from Cy Grant giving a full blooded performance as Ra and Caroline Munro her usual alluring self as Dia.
The action never lets up for a minute and the film should delight most children with an ounce of imagination, along with many adults who remember and love these films from first time around. Not to mention rubber fetishists.
I really couldn't give a flying chicken if I read reviews that disparage this great film. It might be an artifact of its time, but it is a shining one at that. Sparse extras on this release include the original trailer and selected filmographies. 5 out of 5 for the film anyway.
