5.0 out of 5 stars Wondrous In-Flight Entertainment 27 Jan 2012
By ACB (swansea) TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Produced by John Downer and narrated by actor David Tennant, this is a brilliant BBC series to follow 'Frozen Planet' albeit from a different perspective, taking a journey across countries and continents through the eyes of birds. Natural world wonders and man-made landmarks form a scenic backdrop to the challenging exploits of the birds and their interaction with one another and non-avian species inevitably encountered. The activity is captured in, (literally), breathtaking sequences by application of advanced photographic techniques conveniently divided into 5 main settings:

NORTH AMERICA: Migrating snow geese wing under The Golden Gate in San Francisco with pelicans, past Alcatraz and the Statue of Liberty ever aware of bald-eagle predators. Film from an eagle's back reveals the stunning Grand Canyon. In California, pelicans encounter dancing devil rays chasing shrimps, later demonstrating their plunge-diving in the company of dolphins in joint pursuit of anchovies. Geese on flight paths over the Mississippi, and cascading Niagara Falls. At Mono Lake against a surreal landscape, Gulls strike into 'billions' of flies (7 calories each),only 60 per day needed.

AFRICA: Cape gannets arrow-dive on the great sardine run. Unfortunately sharks can eat 12 of them in one gulp and whales and dolphins are in competition. Great white killer sharks prey on seals with kelp gulls feeding on leftovers. Eagles fly through the mists of Victoria Falls. Vultures soar over the Serengeti and reef valley above the yearly migrating wildebeest who are at the mercy of crocodiles, lions and vultures. Fish eagles find an amazing S-shaped living island of lesser flamingos. These are filmed in flight to the Kenyan soda Lakes, Nakuru and Borgoria where algae are in plentiful supply.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful 28 Jan 2012
By Helga
Format:DVD
Wonderful and awe inspiring. I felt humbled by the bravery and beauty of the birds. Not to forget the marvellous and surprising images of the Earth. Birds and scenery took centre stage and not a single face of a presenter blocking the view!! The excitement kept you on the edge of your seat the whole time. The series should win the Academy Award for best documentary feature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely stunningly amazing! 29 Jan 2012
Format:DVD
I was completely capitivated by this series. ( I speak as someone who is not always that taken with nature documentaries.) This programme really is something very special. There is no indication that the follow-up programme showing how it was made, is included with this DVD. I do hope so. Having seen it today, I feel so much admiration for those involved in the production. Their love and concern for the birds they nurture and work with, is very evident - and emotionally touching, and adds another dimension to the production. The appeal of this series is universal; and particularly poignant for those of us who have been lucky enough to rear birds and enjoy their loyal friendship.

I agree, this series deserves to win awards - lots of them!

Wonderful. I can see all the Hard work put behind producing this great documentary. Well narrated too. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I highly recommend it. Some of the scenes are breathtaking and HD does it real justice.

No words are enough to say how wonderful this is. I would just say that the film was more magic before I watched the making of but I don't think it's possible not to watch it.
This film really makes you realize Life is wonderful !
The Blu-ray quality is excellent.
Being French, I went on to watch the French version on Arte, and the narration spoils it. The narration by David Tennant is perfect, I love his Scottish accent, and he is part of the success.
Congratulations to the BBC !

5.0 out of 5 stars Eye opening 18 Feb 2012
By Kiyone
Format:Blu-ray
A truly fantastic journey above the earth, I could only have imagined how stunning and awe inspiring the footage would be from a bird's eye perspective. The director has done a brilliant job and the footage is given the respect it deserves, no people in the frame, just nature at it's finest. Another instant BBC classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly Amazing 18 Jan 2012
By PS
Format:DVD
The best words I can find to describe this new series from the BBC are 'utterly amazing'. Each episode follows an aerial journey across a continent with the final episode being a 'making of'. The spectacular footage of some of the world's most amazing phenomena, all filmed from a bird's eye perspective, is like nothing I have ever seen before. A DVD that will be watched over and over again. Utterly amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Bird's eye view of birds on the wing
What a stunning video. Instead of the usual shots of birds taken from the ground, these photos are taken alongside the birds as if one were flying adjacent to them in the flock. Read more
