This 1971 (recorded 1970) self titled debut from E,W & F sounds almost nothing like the band in later days. The band under went a transformation over the course of the next two albums, loosing certain personel and taking on a new sound. It is a change not too dissimilar to Kool & the Gang's. From pretty hard hitting, bassy funk to pop tunes that have lost all but a sprinkling of soul.

This record is totally different, it's raw and fresh. Scits on the end of tracks give it an upbeat and rolling feel. They clearly had bags of energy and this album is a first explosion onto the scene. Strong horn parts, bass that follows through and some good arrangements. There isn't a bad song here, but highlights include 'Moment of Truth' 'Fan the fire' and 'Bad Tune'. At 29 minutes, it runs a little short, but for it's price it's a winner all the way.

If you buy this album expecting the kind of music EWF produced from the mid 70's, post "That's The Way..." with Philip Bailey on vocals, you'll be disappointed. Although they didn't quite go the same route as the Commodores and Kool and the Gang, they moved well away from their Funk roots as the 70's unfolded.

Earth Wind and Fire started life as a street funk band, like The Ohio Players, BT Express and the Fatback Band (and many others). This first album has them on fine funky form, with many of the tracks being sought after as Funk rarities, prior to this release.

That should give you the idea of what you will find here. Funk workouts with minimal vocals, lots of brass, etc etc. There is only one midtempo mellow track. Not exactly an essential purchase, but if you want to dig beyond the obvious Funk bands then this would be worth your money.
