Product Description

Product Description

Released in November of 1995, Michael Jackson's "Earth Song" was in many ways anachronistic. In both subject and sound, it was like nothing else on the radio. It defied the cynicism and apathy of Generation X; it challenged the aesthetic expectations for a "pop song" (or even a "protest song"), fusing blues, opera, rock and gospel; and it demanded accountability in an era of corporate greed, globalization and environmental indifference. A massive hit globally (reaching #1 in over fifteen countries), it wasn't even offered as a single in the United States. Yet nearly two decades later, it stands as one of Jackson's greatest artistic achievements.

In this groundbreaking monograph, author Joseph Vogel (Man in the Music: The Creative Life & Work of Michael Jackson) details the song's context and evolution from its inception in Vienna in 1988, to its release and reception in 1995, to Jackson's final live performance in Munich in 1999. Based on original research, including interviews with the song's key participants, Earth Song: Inside Michael Jackson's Magnum Opus offers a fascinating reassessment of this prophetic musical statement.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last! 14 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a book many of us have been waiting for! At last someone has the courrage to talk strictly about MJ's art as such. We get a background for the song, the inspirations, the influences from other art, from his worries for the planet etc. You feel so much into MJ's situation and the state of the earth.
Joe Vogel is a blessing to the world. After reading both his "Man in the Music" and this book I am so grateful to him and I will highly recomend both books for those who are really intersted in MJ's music, where it comes from, how it was created and all other things strictly to the creation of this wonderful piece of art that we can enjoy also after the Master is gone. Thank you!

Mr Vogel gives an insight that almost bring Michael back into the room as you read it. All the emotions that were Michael are there.Hard to imagine a more immaculately conceived book about the artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting 8 Feb. 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I never realised there was so much to this song before reading this. Love the way Joe Vogel writes as it is so easy to read and understand the meaning behind Michaels songs. So much time and work went into Earth Song which as we all know was well worth the effort and this song will still be played for many many years to come, Michael cared so much about the planet, as we all should, amazing song and interesting book, you'll listen to the song much more closely after reading.
