Product Description

"At this critical juncture in history, it is vital that we set global standards of accountability for corporations in order to put an end to the culture of impunity and double standards that pervade the international legal system. Polly Higgins illustrates how this can be achieved." --Bianca Jagger, social and human rights advocate

About the Author

Polly Higgins, barrister and international environmental lawyer, proposed to the United Nations in April 2010 that Ecocide be classed as the 5th Crime Against Peace alongside Genocide, Crimes Against Humanity, Crimes of Aggression and War Crimes. In June 2012 world leaders will meet in Rio for the 20th anniversary of the first Earth Summit to discuss global governance mechanisms for creating a green economy. Making Ecocide a crime will be among the issues raised.

A brilliant book which has totally changed the way I look at the world. This book should be read by everyone - from all Heads of State to every activist around the world. This book is so refreshing because it clearly outlines how our system can be totally restructured and finally allow the preservation of the Earth to be at the centre of international politics. Highly recommended.

A book of extraordinary relevance 5 Feb. 2014

In this book Polly Higgins deals with the problem of ecocide caused by the incompatibility of our global economic paradigm with ecological stability. She explains with clarity why ecocide should be classified as a crime against Peace in the International Criminal Court. She likens our state of consciousness regarding ecocide as similar to that of society immediately prior to the abolition of slavery in the UK. At that time Business and Economists predicted collapse of the economy if slavery was illegalized. This did not happen and the economies evolved and slaves were freed. Higgins is passionate and very well informed, making her subject fascinating to the concerned global citizen. Her solutions inspire realistic hope despite our deep concern as we progress on our path towards Earth's tipping point.
